Worldwide 'Sailor Moon' Revival
Quote: | A resurgence of interest in the Sailor Moon property has led to a return of the classic magical girl anime series on the Japanese airwaves last fall. Now Toei Animation is hoping to revive the property on a global scale starting in Italy. Toei is partnering with Backstage, which will handle the property’s rights in publishing, TV, and merchandising. Mediaset has acquired the TV rights to the 200-episode anime series and plans to begin broadcasting it in Italy in the fall of 2010.
Toei Animation’s Kanji Kazahaya told Global License: “We are certain that strategically Italy is the ideal country to initiate a global re-launch of the classic Japanese animated series such as Sailor Moon. The Italian public has traditionally been passionate about anime.”
No word yet on a possible North American revival of the property. DIC introduced the series (in a bowdlerized form) to American TV, while Pioneer and ADV released uncut versions of various elements of the extensive library of Sailor Moon anime. Tokyopop released the Sailor Moon manga here, but the licensed lapsed before it could issue the new revised editions that were issued in Japan starting in 2003. |
Wherever I look people are talking about Sailor Moon. Was an announcement made that I missed?
People are talking about a pic of Usagi in one of Funi's Hentalia videos?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBN9lZPl25k
Other people are talking about a video claiming Funimation removed Sailor Moon videos from Youtube, The video has been removed and an update video was posted.

Then you have Justin's comments about Sailor Moon.

As someone who knows what's going on but cannot tell, I will say: give up. It's officially in licensing hell.
Edit: Utena also has issues, though not as bad. Feint hope on that one. |

I don't know where you're picking up these signals, but according to things I've learned first hand, abandon all hope for a license rescue of Sailor Moon for the foreseeable future. There is a significant issue in Japan preventing further release of that property in the States. |

Ain't gonna happen, unless the stars move. |

I just checked. Stars appear to have not moved. So don't get your hopes up

I've lost track. Is this the third or fourth forum that you've made this exact same thread. I'm starting to wonder if you're just trolling to get hits for those videos on YouTube...lol
But seriously, do you think if you post this enough places, some rep from Funi will pop on and say "You've guessed it! We've got the show! You get a free puppy!"
No one here has anymore info that they can share, other than it's not coming out anytime soon. Even if Funi or anyone else had picked it up at the licensing event, despite the fact that they didn't attend, it would still be months at least before there would be any release. The last I heard there was a "significant holdup in Japan" with the property, and it was unlikely to see another release in North America anytime soon. It sounded as though it may have been some rights issue in regards to the US, though that is just speculation on my part.
It's probably best just to let this go for now, and be pleasantly surprised should the license get announced.

The first set of news you posted (about the Sailor Moon license expiring and avaible for purchase by any company) is true, any other news that was later posted I am not sure about.
Though if a company does license Sailor Moon (actually a re-license actually) ANN will surely report it. Until then, it's likely to be a rumor.
As for the Youtube videos, unless it's truly official, those videos may not be true. Remember the Yotsuba anime video? Fan made and the actual author commented that he wasn't making a anime.

Even if it is re-licensed, do you want the original Japanese with a new dub, or the old nostalgia dub? You can't have both of those options.

Re-dubbing would cost a ton of cash and depending on the company that would license the series, that may not actually happen. Though considering how outdated the original English audio is, it would be a tough call.
But subtitle only would be a waste of time.

The problem with using the original audio is that a lot of episodes were edited or done differently from the original, so the audio wouldn't match up to the video, assuming it's an uncensored release.

Initial D didn't have video edits for it's original dub.

Sorry I misread the comment up there, I thought Teriyaki Terrier was saying redubbing Sailor Moon would not be worth doing.
The response from fans of a Sailor Moon sub-only would be like ten times worse then not dubbing Clannad. The only company I can see wanting to pick up Sailor Moon would be Funimation, maybe Sentai Filmworks if they are willing to redub it. I think you can count out all other licensing companies.
Edit: You can count out VIZ, Bandai has there hand full right now, also Media Blasters, and RightStuf it just wouldn't happen not for 200 episodes not including the movies or specials. That also would be with negative feedback for no dub.

So what I'm asking is, are all of the Sailor Moon fans alright with letting the nostalgic old dub go away in favor of a completely new and different one?
