I don't know what ANN's community thinks of this, but I for one would love the original VA's to be brought back. As far as I am aware, all but one are available (and he might even be, I believe at the time of rebuild there had been a death in the family).
https://www.change.org/p/netflix-netflix-use-the-original-voice-actors-for-evangelion-re-dub I don't know if it will do anything, but the Evangelion english dub is iconic to me. |

I'm pretty sure this is going to be removed, but regardless of what ANN thinks... I doubt they'll redub EVA. Netflix is pretty lazy when it comes to redubs. They never do it unless they absolutely have to.

Well, I'm interested now. Considering they're using the old dub actors for the Rebuild movies (where it matters anyway), I wonder if it'll feel awkward. Then again, maybe they're getting Spike Spencer and Tiffany Grant back.

I'd prefer a brand new cast. Spike Spencer's Shinji Ikari is a paper thin caricature, a stereotypical parody version, the classic "cartoon coward voice". Shinji is intended to be frail and submissive, not whiny, which Spencer tags him with. And Tiffany Grant's Asuka lacks any kind of subtlety, taking it "to eleven" more often than not, even when Asuka isn't in her show off mode. Allison Keith is tolerable at best as Misato. I'm pretty neutral on Win Lee's Rei. Nearly any woman who can do a low, unemotional voice can be Rei.
I'm not interested in "iconic", I'm interested in quality. A couple of decent performances here and there by some of the supporting cast doesn't outweigh the terrible casting and direction Evangelion's dub, which doesn't hold up at all, displayed. I don't know how this cast suddenly became popular, but it's definitely a recent phenomenon. I've never seen anyone praise the Eva dub very highly until now. It baffles me. It would be pointless to bring back the old cast to begin with, because they already dubbed this product. It's not like the scripts were in dire need of updating, the performances were just by many voice actors that had no business being in the acting field. It would defeat the purpose of a new dub to retain the old VAs. They should just put on the old one if you want that. Though I doubt even a new dub could compete with the Japanese cast. Megumi Ogata, Kotono Mitsuishi, and Yūko Miyamura alone are peerless in their roles. Last edited by penguintruth on Wed Dec 05, 2018 11:54 am; edited 1 time in total |

If they are sufficiently happy with the original dub to bring back all of the original voice actors, why would they bother to redub the show? Is there something other than voice acting that would prevent them from airing the show as is?

I don't know why she'd be. She hasn't voiced the character for 15+ years, right? Anyway, I think Eva could use a new dub, I listened to the original English dub a few years ago and it definitely sounded sub-par aside from a few moments here and there. I'd love to watch it again with a new dub. And even if Netflix keeps the old dub I'll watch the Japanese version instead. |
