Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin (TV) Source: Video Game (developed by Edelweiss, published by Xseed Games) Demographic: Animation Studio: P.A. Works Genres: action, fantasy Themes: agriculture, mythology Plot Summary: In the far eastern corner of the country of Yanato, it has been believed since ancient times that there are two worlds in this land: the world at the top where the gods live and the world at the foot of the mountain where humans live. Princess Sakuna, a high-ranking deity who lives in the world of the summit, was born to a war god and a fertility god but led a lazy life, wasting the grains her parents had stored. One day, due to some strange circumstances, she is banished from the city of the gods and sent to Hinoe Island, an isolated island inhabited by demons. In a barren land where there is barely enough food for the next day, she cultivates the soil, grows rice, and sets out to defeat the demons. The humans who have stumbled into the world of the gods and the novice fertility god begin their rice-husk-filled communal life together. Air Date & Platform: July 6, 2024 (Saturday) Available on: Crunchyroll Episode Count / Runtime: Pending ---------------------------------- Didn't initially make a thread, because there didn't seem like a lot of following from MAL's member counter, and hence didn't seem that popular, but I guess it's popular enough! Thanks, Tony - it's certainly popular with me! I'll get the ball rolling by reposting what I wrote in the What Are You Watching Now thread:
Episodes 1-5 I thought Quality Assurance in Another World was my favourite new show of the season, but I do believe Sakuna has edged it out. The characters are incredibly engaging and episode 5 got me right in the feels. It's beautiful to look at and I like the humour. Plus, you'll learn a poop ton about rice farming! What's not to love? |

I poked at the game a bit, and concluded "the story seems interesting enough, but this gameplay is not for me." So this anime is a great development for me.

I also love little technical aspects of shows like this. Since so much of the show's theming seems to be having an appreciation for all the hard work that's needed for good rice, it's nice to learn a little about why they have all these steps and how it leads to rice being of higher quality so we can appreciate the hard work the way Sakuna is learning to. |

Episode 13
Another show that unfortunately generate much chatter in this forum. I liked it, rating it Good. Sakuna's bratty nature (which eventually matured) appealed to me and I thought her friend Kokorowa was as cute as button. I liked the gang of misfits that surrounded her, including the warrior weasel (?), Ashigumo. I was actually more interested in the trials and tribulations of growing rice than I was the battle against the demons and the Big Bad. Anyway, it was nice to watch a 1-cours that told a complete story. |
