Other reasons are the belief that because Summer is a time when everything is the most active, so are obakemono, yokai, and ghosts. The heat makes things rot faster, perpetuating kegare, as all life thrives, so does the other side, and despite light driving out yokai from the light of day, fire is also related with yokai and ghosts, even into the night. It also helps that within Onmyodo and Fuusui, the season of Summer is related with the element of fire as well.
