Yeah I dont think VR is ready to truly catch on at this point in time, the cost, the content, and just being well something that the mainstream sees daily on ads and everywhere is just not there yet. Actually I dont think anyone in the mainstream non tech sector even sees what VR is and can do.
At least video games and consoles have enough of a mainstream allure and with families that it is easier to drive sales of that. |

Guess I can grab a cheap one soon then. I assume I'll have to since they're unlikely to make a PS5 backwards compatible, which is just insulting, but inevitable.

I suppose we can expect a PS5 for around 2021 or 2022

I had been debating getting a PS4 Pro, but decided to hold off both because I don't have a 4K TV and because it occurred to me that the PS4 has been around long enough that we probably weren't all that far off from a PS5. At this point, I think I'd rather wait for that, or at the very least it's pretty easy to wait and see if there aren't steep discounts on the Pro.

There are occasional sales for the Pro and of course the biggest discounts are during Black Friday and Christmas. You also don't need a 4k tv to take advantage of Ps4 Pro. For optimized games you're usually given an option for higher framerate at 1080p. For non-optimized games, you can turn off compatibility in the settings to enable full use of the GPU so that games that sometimes stutter or drop fps in the regular PS4 won't in the Pro. |

We've been so traumatized by Format Wars in both movie and games over the last fifteen years, the minute PS4 was literally announced, we all said, "Wow, wonder what Sony has planned for PS5!" Normally, it's the company that indulges in Planned Obsolescence, but in the game-console community it seems to be firmly rooted in the mind of the CONSUMER to throw out the old model in a year or two. We knew a PS5 was going to happen, but ask us, and lord help us if we knew why or what one was actually going to be. As an old video Format-War veteran, I knew that we got the PS3 and PS4 for a reason: - PS2 used DVD-style technology, and helped sell Sony's interest in DVD back when nobody outside of the game or computer community knew what the heck the disks were. - PS3 used Blu-ray disk technology, came along in time to sell Sony's interest in Blu-ray disk (remember that copy of Spiderman 3 you got with your console?), and, like Blu-ray, managed to time itself perfectly to the FCC's changeover to digital HDTV flatscreens. - PS4 was, probably at some early management stage, supposed to sell 4K UHD, and the Pro has some upgrades to process 4K video--But the idea of following PS2 & 3 and selling a 4K UHD disk player inside your console was sabotaged by nasty in-fights between Sony Interactive Entertainment and Sony Home Entertainment over whose hardware would spoil whose other hardware sales, and SHE doubled down on trying to sell us standalone 4K UHD players instead. With no new monitor-screen format on the horizon, there IS...NO...REASON...for a PS5 to even theoretically exist, except for A) we were, quote-fingers, "supposed" to have one by now, and B ) to make up for the mistakes the PS4 made: Namely by including struggling 4K UHD disk, and--what was probably the idea earlier--streamlining the system for more future native VR capability. I'm guessing the latter isn't quite as much on the table now.
It hasn't found the right game yet--The ones we've had so far have been indie-produced at best, and feel like bad parodies of "What we'll probably be playing on VR", but Moss hits PSVR disk in a couple weeks, and wow, does this knock your argyles off. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FguiwVNCs0 (It also depends on exactly what kind of VR you've been enjoying, IYKWIM...And I think you do. There is an industry that has found its niche.) I'm still a little disgruntled about everyone--Sony included--wishfully digging Blu3D's grave a week after it hit shelves, and before most of its own mainstream critics and industry gravediggers had gotten an actual look at it either...But keep in mind, if it hadn't been for digital 3DTV technology, VR as we know it wouldn't even EXIST today, and you'd still be looking at bad 90's polygon-CGI from that Oculus Rift parody video. Instead of the brightly-colored polygon Minecraft Worlds of the 90's, we've got crisp game- CGI, 3D aerial GoPro trips over Paris, and African lions inches away from our face, that's certainly not the VR we were expecting twenty years ago in sci-fi movies. (Yes, I'm looking at you, Lawnmower Man... ) |

PSVR, maybe, could always use a little tweaking, but Playstation Vue does not need "improvements" It needs to be dropped like an anchor into the ocean, forgotten about, and letting the big boys to bleed all the money on TV streaming, which we "users" are all watching anyway. For the last twenty years, Sony has lost more money stubbornly refusing to admit that someone else has a better technology than they do, and trying to make their own all by themselves. |

The PS4 Pro isn't even two years old (Fall 2016). PS5 is most likely gonna be 2020 at the EARLIEST. It's confirmed there's no hardware announcement at E3, and that's literally the only place they'd do this at besides their own event that they do in jan/feb. Either way, it's a long wait. If there's games on PS4 you want to play, there's zero reason to wait. Furthermore, PS5 probably won't be backwards compatible so it won't even play the same games. If you want to play multiplatform games, just built a PC. You'll save a lot of money in the long wrong thanks to no fees to play online and much cheaper game costs thanks to Steam. Lastly, I don't see what a 4k TV has to do with anything. Barely any games run at true 4k on PS4 Pro. It's a joke. And even then they only run at 30fps. It's much more rewarding (and honestly, can be argued is pay2win) to use the Ps4 Pro to run games in higher performance mode to get more FPS instead. The only game where the "Resolution" mode was better was God of War because it's performance mode was unlocked FPS that was extremely unsteady so it felt far choppier than the locked 30fps of "Resolution" mode. For gaming, 4k on a console is a joke 90% of the time. The only game it's really worth it in is Sea of Thieves on XBOX ONE X. If you meant for movies and such, the PS4 Pro doesn't even support 4k blu-ray, only digital 4k support (very few Netflix shows, Amazon, ect). TLDR; Get a PS4 Pro if there's exclusive games you want to play. Now. The price very likely won't drop under the $299 it's going for now except at sales like Black Friday. There's no reason to even consider the standard PS4. It has pretty major FPS issues on basically every new game (God of War has a lot of dips into the low 20s, for example). I still suggest building a gaming PC first anyway. Far more versatile, backwards compat for decades, and you only need to upgrade parts of it when new consoles come out. PS4 Pro if you want those exclusives. PS5 is years away |

Yup, there is no reason they can't make it backwards compatible this time at least as far as tech goes. Even the GPU won't really matter so long as they don't for some reason opt for non-standard hardware like we saw in previous generations. Even this isn't likely. There was a reason Sony and MS finally caved and adopted standardized hardware. Of course, they could always decide to block it to just be dicks and sell stuff back to you. I'm pretty sure MS won't do that because they're actually working pretty hard to let you play 360 games on the Xbox one, and unless Sony wants to look bad in comparison, they will likely match the move next generation. They might have done more for PS4 backwards compatibility as well if not for the PS3 using that cell processor crap making it substantially harder to do than it was for MS. I also think it is pretty likely MS will keep pushing more backwards compatibility and other features gamers want after getting massively burned by pissing gamers off with the Xbox One at launch. |

Prices may fall, but perhaps not permanently. When the PS4 was released, I recall that the price of the PS3 actually increased in real terms, presumably so as not to make its successor seem too dear by comparison. |

That's just not true. I finished playing God of War on my original PS4 a few weeks ago, and had absolutely no FPS issues. It looked gorgeous, played smooth as butter. Also been playing Horizon: Zero Dawn, and replaying Persona 5, and again, no issues. Other recent titles I've played with no FPS drop include Resident Evil 7, Dark Souls 3, Nioh, Uncharted 4... The list goes on. With a gaming PC, meanwhile, it can be hit or miss for multiplatform games, depending on your specific rig setup and the quality of the port's optimization. I agree a new PS4 buyer might as well get the Pro if they can afford it, but the original PS4 provides a perfectly enjoyable experience for most titles. As for PS5, my prediction based on Sony's statement about laying low until the end of March '21 is that it'll release for the 2021 holiday season. |

I'm getting old.
I think what concerns me the most with the PS4 likely leaving the market in what is a foreseeable future is what someone mentioned above; what format a PS5 would be? There currently isn't reason for a PS5 to exist sans to "fix" or modernize some of the PS4's shortcomings. Plus there is a real possibility that the next generation of console games will be largely digital with a need for online presence. I know plenty deal with digital now (ex: Steam) but in the console realm it seems like digital games are largely at the mercy of their publisher's continued support. If they shut down the servers, either a large chunk or possibly even close the game entirely (ex: Ace Combat Infinity). I really don't want to live with a console where I'm at the mercy of what a publisher dictates. I have plenty of games lying around that are five to ten plus years old that I periodically re-visit or in some cases play for the first time. I don't want to pull something up to find out that I can't access a huge chunk of it or even at all. I still also like physically buying games, even if they often just come with a package and a disk. I find it hard to justify $50-$60 a title when I don't even get a physical representation of it (I held off on buying Little Witch Academia as it's digital-only...).
You're missing out on what's a pretty good title if you haven't played it yet. Sure it plays a lot like a PS3 era game and has some short-comings particularly in graphics, but Bandai Namco did a pretty good job with the localization with, in my opinion, some of the better English VO work put into a recent JRPG. Christina Vee does a really good job with Violet (the MC), and the whole game doesn't really have any slow or down points. I enjoyed every hour. |
