Huh, never realised it started out as an unlicensed site. This highlights the important balance I feel this community needs. Yes, piracy is a thing and it should be a thing, otherwise many new fans won't join up. Those who don't have Netflix or those who want to try shows that aren't on there, they aren't going to pay right off the bat. Piracy is unfortunately necessary to get fans in that way.

However, once you have enough money, and once you're deep enough down the rabbit hole of this fandom, that's when you switch to legal services. Arguments about blu rays being the 'only' way aside, every little bit helps.

As a long time Crunchy Roll subscriber I must say I really like this news, especially the amount of royalties paid to the Anime industry. More revenue for the industry can only be good. Now if the animators would only be paid more, especially the new ones.

The difference being is that VHS fansubbers didn't make money off of advertising on their way to becoming legitimate DVD licensers. Also, I started watching anime streaming legally on Hulu around the same time so it didn't have to be illegal; It just was as that was the only way to get the most content as possible in one place.

"Once you have enough money"... Yeah, we don't talk about that either. Everything was completely legal... "titles without authorization"... which now includes the part that wasn't. Give it time and I swear it'll become "preprior authorization"

These are perhaps who are most deserving of royalties. Even if it was a one-time payment of $1000, the animators definitely have worked hard enough for a few hundred in royalties.

It's almost as if you don't know that you can watch Crunchyroll without a subscription - and thus don't know you don't have to pay off the bat. Or you're just ignoring that in favor of finding a slim basis to excuse piracy. (And quite frankly, one of the silliest I've ever heard.)

Yeah no. There is no streaming service that doesn't offer at minimum a week's free trial of their services. Also like someone said earlier in the thread you can watch Crunchyroll (and Funimation as well) without a subscription, the only caveat is ads.

Even with Netflix and their abyssmal anime releases in the west there is literally no reason for piracy to exist anymore. There are simply too many services.

Still useful for old / obscure shows but there really is no excuse for pirating modern anime.

I'm waiting for the animators to say they are not seeing this profit going into their pockets. Because that's exactly what they said about inserting Netflix into the Japanese anime market. Probably some braggart producer will say that this is how users have to act in legality as this helps the industry ... This industry they control as a niche, while the animators remain dependent on the same model ever.

Is the money going where it needs to go to or is it making the rich even richer? As we've already established, the amount of money from merchandising outstrips the money made by anime many, many fold (even since Tezuka's time) but the animators see none of it.

Unless you wnat to watch Pocket Monster, Yu-Gi-Oh, Digimon, Danball Senki, Yokai Watch, Doraemon, Keroro Gunsou, Rockman, Crayon Shin-chan, Pretty Cure, Pripara, Jewelpet, or any of the other series that are either never picked up/cancelled/censored dub only.

Or if you want to see the OVAs and movies for franchises like One Piece or Detective Conan or other series which never get released here. Or the first 700 episodes of Detective Conan in general for that matter.

Or if series suddenly disappears from a stream service because of space/licensing issues.

Or...

Umm...Aside from a crap ton of older unlicensed shows that have accumulated fanbases over the years? Until just Discotek's rescue recently, the only way somebody could watch Dancougar legally was via the years out of print CPM VHS releases. That's not even getting into the conclusion OVAs like Requiem for the Victims, God Bless or Burning Epilogue, some of which I don't believe have ever been officially released by Western publishers and heck, Nova's never even been touched.

Heck, there's even ENTIRE FRANCHISES that have been ignored by Western companies for the most part.

Modern stuff, I'll give you for the most part but there's still some good shows that slip through the cracks, time and time again. It's been proven that older stuff simply doesn't sell well by other attempts which leaves up to fans to do it, most of which (in my experience) do take them down, should the series get licensed in some form.

This isn't even getting into the hyper obscure OVA market either.

That's more of a problem with the anime industry itself, there's only so much outside licensors can do about it.

No wonder Yuri On Ice won last year in the anime award. Hopefully, it doesn't get voted as other section and win this year again.

Not to be crass but aren't a few of you getting ahead of yourselves? The article only states the royalties were paid to the industry. There's no information on how much actually went into the pockets of the actual staff literally working on the anime.

I'd like to know which anime received how much in royalties and what portion of those said royalties were distributed to the creators and their immediate staff.
