It is still a very big market. To me, that is when there is at least a $100 million market. Being $10+ billion is enormous.

With the manga market being so vast, the 12% drop isn't all that bad.

I held off on buying my manga throughout the year except for a few series waiting for a good deal. Ended up dropping $2k on a nearly half-off holiday sale.

Not only that, I think that many people prefer buying digital manga nowadays.

Scanlations have nothing to with the Japanese market. Pure scans might, that's something that mostly affects only Japan, as it said this is about the Japanese market, not overseas one.

The most likely reason for most of the recent decline is shift to digital alternatives, it DID say 'physical' copies...

Physical manga won't die. There's nothing to worry about.

Going with the scanlation thing, let's be honest here: scanlations both hurt sales in the sense less people are willing to buy the volumes and sometimes might help in the sense some series can popularity through scanlations.

True for overseas markets. As I stated above this article is about the Japanese market, scanlations there hardly play any large role as there'd be no reason to translate the stuff in the first place... If GainaxFanboy had written 'raws/scans' instead of 'scanlations' in his post above it would have made more sense in context...

Not too surprising. Japan's population in general is aging, and manga is mostly aimed the under 40 year old crowd, so it's market is shrinking, or at the least remaining stable instead of growing. Then over the course of the last few years, Japan's publishers have finally started to really get on board with the whole ebook thing. So more and more people in Japan that read manga are likely buying it digitally. With the result that physical sales decline fairly quickly as the market isn't growing quickly enough to pad the changeover.

JPN twitter users do post ENG scanlation screen captures though before and even after the official release of mags and etc, so I dont think one can really discount that JPN people dont access such illicit content.

In any case the article doesnt mention if they estimate Digital Volume sales so it seems some portion of the market may just not being capture in their current method of estimating.

Also the fact that there's more stuff to split one's time/budget to might factor in. For example, console hardware sales in Japan increased 85 billion from 2016 to 2017, which alone balances these figures out for those two years...

More people are switching over to ebooks. I still prefer to own physical copies of series I follow, but space definitely becomes an issue.
