Satoshi Chiba's novel series is gigantic. According to the Japanese wiki, it started in 1988 and only concluded last year. Mecha in a world resembling medieval Europe, with a lot of emphasis on the rise and fall of nations and political scheming.

Seikoku 1092: 19 volumes and 2 side stories
Seikoku Oukami-den: 4 volumes
Seikoku Gunryuu-den: 23 volumes and 5 side stories.

There's also a short series set in the same world by another author.

Wow. You're not joking, right? Shocked
Since this looked awesome, I was really interested in reading this when I saw the article, but I might just want to stick with the reboot instead.

@vanfanel: With those 53 volumes and side stories you mentioned, I am surprised this series hasn't already had TV or web anime adaptations. 23 volumes could easily cover 120+ episodes and those 7 side-stories could cover 22 episodes.

Yep; considering its longevity and the wealth of material available, I also thought it was odd that nobody had taken a crack at it until now. OTOH, Guin Saga had 100+ volumes out before it got an anime, so I guess sometimes it just takes time for the stars to align.
