Do we already know if this follows up right after the events of TSR or does it skip further into the novels?

No Mikuni Shimokawa theme song, going from Kyoto Animation to God damn Xebec, animation that's worse than the series from 2005, no returning staff members... let's just say I'm not too optimistic.
Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card really spoiled me but it makes me wonder why other reboots can't be as straightforwardly good as that. I had my doubts heading into that for sure, but there was enough promise that I was optimistic. In this case I'd actually be surprised if we got anything better than mediocre. |

Mostly the former but a bit of the later. DVMC was adapted into an audio drama but it's mostly a sequel to TSR.
Are you implying something? Because Xebec did Exodus which is bar none one of the best mecha shows of the last few years in terms of animation easily. Are you ignoring that Gatoh is returning to rewrite the scripts in addition to quite a bit of past series' staff? This is a massive passion project for Gatoh so I believe it'll end up being great. Besides; TSR was an odd duck. It was one of the first anime series done in HD iirc and KyoAni brought their A game for it which ended up burning A LOT of the staff on doing another mecha show at the studio. It doesn't look any worse either considering a lot of the budget is easily going to the second half, with it becoming much more action heavy. |

I wonder how many episodes it will take before I can get past the CG Mechs I know I harp on about it too much, but it is a hard thing to not concentrate on. Its even worse when it is a show that has until now key-framed the Mechs.

Bitter pill for certain from animated hand art to less than stellar CG Mechs and action. I heard some people who grew up with CG think the opposite about hand animation. I guess it's generational thing now. Well, FMP looks action pack for certain. I just hope it's story and pacing meets up with 1st season's quality. That's what i sorely miss, along with touch comedy which 2nd season barely had in comparison. |

I certainly didn't grow up with CG (I'm 57), but I don't see the superiority of hand drawn mechs (or spaceships, etc.). Unless the animation is essentially traced over a wireframe or flat shaded rendered 3D model (which then makes it questionable if it is really hand drawn), it is easy for it to go off model along the way. CG also allows for more dynamic animation on a similar budget. |

It integrates perfectly into the show Because it is a drawing as opposed to a model with(at least in the case of Anime)limited movements, you can do all sorts of stuff. Play with the perspective, change the look and colours on the fly and have parts break off, which was a central part of Broken Blade. Some of the cuts are I impressive, stuff that when you see a 3D model do, it doesn't even register. But when you see it done with key-frames, it is something amazing. I can't find any really good cuts on such short notice, but this should do as an example https://sakugabooru.com/data/5b4c139f9493b203db00edfe374e2bfa.webm |

It skips over one novel entirely that would come right after TSR. That novel wasn't central to the plot, but it did have some solid character development for the not Sousuke or Chidori part of the cast. |

Eh? If I didn't know the anime's history, you could tell me that IV is an immediate follow-up to TSR produced by the same studio and I'd believe it, based on what I've seen of the PVs (which the tragic exception of the mecha, of course). Anyway, it's not like Kyoto was ever going to come back to FMP. At least not to my mind. And hey, the franchise started at Gonzo, and that turned out alright. Also, while I'm sad about the lack of a new Mikuni Shimokawa song too, I think the effort we're getting from Tamaru Yamada is great. |
