Nice to hear! The game was a lot of fun to play.
I honestly expected this number to be higher.

Unfortunately, Persona and Megaten in general still remains a niche franchise despite the recent surge in popularity. Hope the next game does better. 1.8 million is still pretty good though.

Persona is in a better position than SMT at least. Persona is in a upward swing that stands to gain more popularity if they don't take too long for 6. SMT will probably always be niche. Maybe being on the switch can help it.

C'mon Atlus. I've already played it on PS3. Now gimme the Steam version.

I can't imagine Sega will continue to let Atlus forsake the PC market considering how much Sega has warmed to Steam in the past few years.

I've never heard of Megaten, but I'm watching the Persona 4 anime at the moment--
One franchise is certainly becoming a little more fan-mainstream than the other.
And yes, it's an addictive game, in that the anime-like school-sim plot forces you to know the characters personally, which is how game franchises create fan identity and become iconic.
Like KH3, it had already "sold" a million copies by the time it was announced, and a full year of pre-hype on both continents didn't hurt.
Plus, there's no other real first "Must-buy" game for PS4 yet apart from the sloggy but pretty-looking Last Guardian or overhyped Final Fantasy XV, so P5 seems to have taken the role and rode the new interest in console sales.

Then you'll be even less impressed to know it was also sold on PS3. But really, for such a very Japanese JRPG these numbers are impressive.

Yeah, there hasn't been a turn-based non-FF JRPG that has sold this well on home consoles in quite some time I believe

There hasn't been a turn-based JRPG, FF or non, JRPG ON PS3 or 4 since FF went XII, and you still can't beat the addictive appeal of them.
The player can set up the other characters' turn-based auto-attack in the minor dungeon battles, but when it's strategically better to shut it off and make it turn-based for the big bosses, strike by strike by defense/heal, it's still a matter of knowing each character and their strengths by heart....No school like the Old School.

What game has you know that has sold more than the amount of console systems sold? I'm curious. Even dragon quest, which sold 1,148,888 copies recently, hasn't sold enough to cover every single 3DS console.

1.8 million worldwide may not seem much from a worldwide perspective, but for a niche title like Persona 5, it's a pretty impressive number.

This is the first AAA Atlus game, even if the tech is last gen, so P5 also needs to make AAA numbers. Especially with the 2 year delay. Or you know, they could burry us in spin-offs. A glass half full situation, i guess.
I hope for a better script next time, as this one retold P3 again, just without any stakes. They also reused characters archetypes from the last the 2 games for the whole party, with the exception of Yusuke. I had to look up his name though, which is very bad as i took me 68 hours to see the ending and had to use all of them equally to get the navigation trophy. The game´s trophies are actually pretty fun and force you to engage with all systems, even if it becomes nearly impossible without a guide to go for most of them while still maxing out all links.
The battle system is also the best to date (in the sub-series) and the first half of the dungeons are pretty good but the last 20-ish hours nearly broke me once the casino started and certainly after the framing device managed to reach the "present". Thank god that the game lets you auto-win/recruit demons if you power level enough, as i would have put P5 below even P1 if i had to play the 3rd act for real, instead of speed-running it with my accidentally fused Satan. Hail Satan!
Its if the devs knew that they overreached by making this game over 50% longer than the last 2 entries.
You can actually finish the whole PSX trilogy in the time P5 craws to it´s convoluted ending. Less is sometimes truly more and i doubt that the critics who handed out perfect 10s saw it though to the end. 7,5/10
PS: Goro Akechi is the best SMT character in at least a decade, i´ll admit that much. Give him an add-on campaign!

I expected the number to be closer to 3Mu but I can't blame gamers for not wanting to play something that isn't dub. Think about it. The game is going after 75M PS4/3s (dubbed in Japanese and English). Had it been dub in Spanish (Latin American), French & Portuguese it'd have done much better.
I don't understand gaming studios. Let's spend $1M in dlc/etc but not spend $x00k to dub the game in various languages.
If you haven't played, I highly recommend it. I spent 160hrs with it and the true ending was great! Waiting for P5G.
