DO PLEASE LET IT JUST BE A TEMPORARY HIATUS! Ever since this manga diverged from the Anime's ending I had been genuinely hooked, it's a damn good series, and I'd be heartbroken if it never has the chance to round out to its own ending in the future (such as is the case with High School of the Dead). As long as it returns at all, I'll be patient!

I imagine they need time to think where the story is heading and future arcs etc

They just finished the University arc recently and it had mixed reception (although I liked it way better than School arc) so probably they just need some time to plan the futuire plot for the third story arc.

Other way round, anime diverged from the manga, and then ended.

I'm aware of that, should've said when the manga extended beyond where the anime stopped.

If it isn't health-related or something in the manga-ka's personal life (family issues) or Executive Meddling, I don't see why it would go on hiatus unless the manga-ka was lazy.

Never really understood what happened to High School of the Dead. It seemed so popular.

Hopefully, this hiatus for the School Live! manga is for vacation or some sort of future story boarding.

Just a little reminder, the School Live! anime didn't really end......., yeah they did their little thing and ended the school arc, but can you really call that a true ending. True that may be all the anime we ever see of it, since, supposedly, it didn't do all that well in Japan. But there was no conclusion to the character's stories, no conclusion to what had happened, and so there are a lot of unanswered questions.

The manga-ka for that series passed away. My point was that hopefully School Live's hiatus doesn't turn out as seriously as that.

More accurate is to say he was the writer for that. The one who drew the series was Satou Shouji. Satou has several other series under his own belt like Triage X, so it's not entirely inconceivable that he might pick it up where it stopped or at least do a few bonus chapters. Or he could find another writer to continue it with.
