That's sad. Maybe the world isn't ready for a rapping rabbit yet.

Or the English-speaking world, to be exact, taking into account the despise against furries those countries have.

Or, maybe we just didn't care about the Parappa-Verse, now that song-rhythm games have become a little more established since the Playstation One, and wacky stylized cardboard cutouts just couldn't compete with Guitar Hero and Hatsune Miku?

Oh damn, I heard about this project, thought it sounded interesting. Had no idea it was a kickstarter though, I woulda thrown a couple bucks for it

It has nothing to do with furries. One of the biggest gaming kickstarters was Yooka-Laylee that received 2m pounds off nostalgia towards Banjo-Kazooie and other n64 era collectathons. Nostalgia for those kinds of games is massive. Thinking Rap Rabbit would receive half of that based on Parappa's and Gitaroo's name was frankly pretty silly.
You could argue they could've done this kickstarter differently, but I don't think any momentum would've carried them over the 900k mark with a highly niche rhythm game.

I'm saddened to see it fail though. I put 30 pounds towards it even if I had a hard time believing in its success.

nah, America digs furries, that's why Disney is so popular. It's foundation is based on furries.

I think maybe it's that it was really targeting only English speaking people, rather than English and Japanese, but with a gameplay device that is more popular in Japan. Rhythm games aren't as big in the West, and Parappa and co. were only popular in a niche community, and probably moreso because they were doing something that hadn't really been seen before.

Well yeah besides stuff like High School Musical, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and a number of other works that don't feature animals or half animal hybrids.

It was a poorly run campaign. I dunno if a better one could have pulled in 900k, but they absolutely should have launched with a well-done prototype video. Instead, they slapped together a promo vid on the quick that was painfully bad and released it well after the campaign was already floundering.

I'm pretty sure a bunch of those had cute animal characters that people loved.
And anyway, you can't argue with Mickey Mouse's continued popularity.

But this is getting off topic so.

Call me crazy, but this failure for a rapping rabbit to not get money might be due to a certain robot not turning out to be a fun game.

Yeah, that's what i felt why the kickstarter failed. They could have made a playable prototype demo so fans can see how the gameplay works and it might have people interested but they didn't since they only put out concept art. Two successful kickstarters i know succeeded because they have a playable demo for fans to try out.

So in the end, the kickstarter failed because the creators didn't do something to catch backers attention. Heck, had they released this video at the beginning, it might have work.

In all honesty it didn't look too good. I was kind of excited about it since it was a successor to Parappa, but from the stuff I saw on the kikstarter, it just didn't look fun or interesting enough.

A shame really as I wanted to be able to play this game as I was a fan of Parappa and Gitaroo Man. But like already said the kickstarter just wasn't done very well, no real gameplay footage at all and just no real hype anywhere about it, the amount needed was probably too high for this sort of niche game. Also It was only for PS4/PC so I was cut off from backing it as my PC can't run games and I've only got Xbox One.

I would've backed this if it was for a platform I have or intend to have. (Well, whenever "PC" is mentioned, I typically assume they mean "Windows.")

Somehow, I feel like this could also potentially work on mobile systems. It'd be a huge crapshoot, but if it catches people's attention, they'll have a hit.

These are more in the style of cartoon animals rather than anything you'd expect from the furry fandom. Even then, plenty of game series with talking anthropomorphic animals have succeeded in the past, such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Star Fox, Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper, Bubsy, and yes, PaRappa itself.

Zootopia was also a huge box office success worldwide, so I think the general public is fine with anthropomorphic animals, as long as they're not hypersexualized, which this game isn't.

Rhythm games are pretty popular in the west. It's just that the ones that ARE popular almost entirely use English-language music from already-established musicians and get noticed in that way. Rhythm games with mostly original soundtracks stopped being popular many years ago in the west, and I think THAT is why it's a hard sell.

Not enough money invested in trailer/marketing efforts. This was essentially a social media campaign on the cheap, and most social media obsessed kids these days are way too young to remember Parapa. They needed to put together a longer video with some kind of cool action and at least launch that at a major game convention, if not a playable demo. Getting 1.1 million USD based on Parapa nostalgics alone and not even reaching them where they are now, was destined to fail.
