Given her statement I'd begrudgingly agree. Her design seems less related to actual diving, and was from an outside firm. A character designed by a local artist that was loosely based around the visual themes/trends of actual divers would be preferred.

I feel like there's something ironic here.
Given that the whole point of the character was to promote and generate tourism/revenue for Shima, the creator has probably gained more publicity and revenue from the mascot than the prude octogenarian citizens of the city she was intended to represent.
Good for him.

Hmmm, sash is white, with tie-on hood but the rest looks like the character design. I'd say a close artistic representation of traditional Ama divers (ala 1940's). Glad Maribon is just using it anyway, maybe the Ise-Shima region will get tourism yen in spite of themselves...

The moral of the story is shrieking like a banshee and trying to censor at something you don't like for such petty reasons might result in more of that thing you don't like popping up a lot more.

More power to her creator. Keep sticking it to those naysayers.

Despite no longer being the official city mascot, Megu-chan is still enjoying her time in the limelight!

Oh man, I vaguely remember this whole
Quote: | "We've drawn a sexy version of you!"
"...could you please not?"
"Don't censor me, prude!" |
thing. Pretty ridiculous, but I'm glad it's working out for the artists.

So, out of curiosity, do you think anytime a female expresses her dislike for something she "shrieks like a banshee" or do you have audio of this happening that non of us have seen. If so please do release it!
Having said that, a bunch of spiteful otaku pulling together 60 grand for what is barely a tick above an old Newgrounds anime-style flash video with less than 3,000 and 16,000 views each is hardly what I would call popping up "a lot" more. According to these women, all they wanted was to not see their local government funds being used to represent them so inaccurately. The total of 60 seconds of mostly-still-frame-but-still-technically-animation in these videos where the artists failed to even sync her lips properly (lol) isn't exactly the thumb in the eye you want it to be to those angry old gals.

Really. You didn't ask out of curiosity, you asked so you could cast Hoppy800 as sexist and as misogynistic. If you are going to defame someone, at least be honest about it.

Seriously, calling that "animation" seems almost generous.

Dear god, that animation is ugly.
If they wanted to attract future pearl divers and keep the practice alive, wouldn't a bishonen or cute animal mascot make more sense?

I honestly wonder what all the money was needed for as the cost of the goodies that came with their pledge must have cost more than the animation even as they were basically cafepress type goods with a few pieces of keyart. If people who pledged money are happy with their purchase though I guess they got what they paid for.

If your goal is to draw a mascot that accurately represents the demeanor of a group of people, it is only sensible and polite to adhere to criticism given by that group of people. That said, I find the majority of responses in this thread so far to be baffling. This has nothing to do with "censorship" or being a "prude" and everything to do with respecting how a group of people wish to be represented by an artist's work.
