Pretty fitting. Just as Wondy sometimes (and ideally, lol) lacks much or any male part in her origins, Usagi does as well. Both have powerful queen-mom's behind them, and being a warrior and princess given to them as a role/destiny. And both technically weren't supposed to be the warriors they become. (Wondy with leaving Themyscira, and Usagi being reborn into Sailor Moon.)

If we go with aesthetics, both Wonder and Moon are Red, White, Blue motif, Wondy traditionally had a magical transformation being based on the Greek Pantheon as her hand wave of her more mystical abilities, and of course the large golden tiara and flashy red boots.
Without going into character history, design wise the elements clearly indicate Moon had SOME inspiration from WW.

And Wonder Woman, too, in the early days of the comic, had sometimes been known to defeat enemies by flinging her tiara at them...Yes.

Yes! I hope this movie is going to be successful, so people can get rid the notion that female superhero movie don't sell well. Elektra, Catwoman, and Supergirl bombed really hard. Sometimes I wonder why it's really hard to make a female superhero movie. If Wonder Woman, the most ICONIC female superhero bombed in box office, then we must kiss goodbye to other female superhero led.

Huh, I never realized they had so much in common until now. That's pretty interesting.

On the other hand, on the TV front, Supergirl is doing just fine, at least domestically. I think there's hope for this--whether Wonder Woman succeeds or fails, if you ask me, will depend more on the movie's quality than its premise.

I love Supergirl TV! There's many "good" movie that bombed in box office (The Iron Giant anyone?). I will make sure to watch WW on cinema.

Actually, Usagi DOES have a father and brother. She may have had a life on Silver Millennium, but she did live her whole current life with a family.

Does Mitsuishi have a role in the Japanese version of the movie itself?

Considering Sailor Moon's similarities to Wonder Woman, Kotono-san is a perfect fit for narrating the trailer.

This movie is the DCEU's last shot for me. If they somehow turn this into another dumpster fire like the first three in this universe, I'm done. You just CAN'T ruin Diana's first big screen feature film. She should have gotten one years ago, but even now it's still important. Please be good.
I still just can't for the life of me figure out if Gal Gadot can actually act worth a damn, or she's just extremely photogenic with a sexy accent.

True, there is more that's in common and resonates between them too~. I almost feel like later WW writers/artists have a bit of influence from BSSM too, so it feels a bit full circle.

Oh yeah! I almost forgot that~.

Agreed~. It's funny too because even when female led movies do well (Hunger Games), people don't want to give them their due credit. But I think WOndy can help change that.

It's cool, isn't it~? Naoko was definitely inspired by Sentai, but I feel like she probably had a little Wondy inspiration too. Which isn't too odd though, as even Tezuka was into superheroes.
But yeah, I am glad that Supergirl is doing well. I have hope, even after WW!

Hehe, well, as a princess (which is why I mentioned the powerful queen as a mother). In the manga, this is more evident and very important. It's a very strong parallel to WW when you look at Stars.

I feel the same. I actually don't think they have it in them to really go the mile, but I want this to be good and to like it. (Already no Phillipus draws my side-eye though.) But yes, Diana has deserved way better, but DC is in a weird place of trying to diminish her worth while also trying to keep her relevant for the sake of looking good and trying to profit off her. :/

I've kept hearing that the reason female superhero bombed is because the story is bad. Lmao what? There's many movies that get 4/10 or 5/10 rating in IMDb yet somehow still make a profit *coughTheLastAirbendercough*
Even if WW movie turned to be disaster, I'm still hoping it's still make a huge profit.

Female-led movies DO succeed, but they tend to succeed mostly with female viewers. You can see it in the mainstream treatment of the first two movies with female protagonists to break US$1 billion in box office--Titanic and Frozen. We've recently broken out of that with the third though, Star Wars: The Force Awakens (and by extension, Rogue One), but they have the Star Wars name behind them. But I think those Star Wars films can be a good transition.
If you ask me, I think it's because until recently (and I would say we're still in that transitional period), there is a stigma against boys and men watching movies aimed at girls and women or movies requiring the viewer to identify with a female protagonist. They're afraid of being labeled as gay or weak, as watching movies in a theater is a social experience, with many other people seeing you watch it too. This has changed by leaps and bounds, and I think the stigma has diminished enough that a Wonder Woman movie can succeed with both sexes. But even just a few years ago, you would have incidents like toy companies refusing to make action figures for franchises with female protagonists due to being repeatedly burned by low-sales of such franchises (and I have no doubt in my mind that this is why this movie was in development hell).
Of course, it's still not totally gone. You're going to still have people who are obsessed with masculinity and expect other guys around them to adhere to their standards too. Then again, my father had this personality, and he had no qualms about watching the Wonder Woman TV series.

I'm optimistic with this one because it doesn't have the grim and gritty tone that DC movies tend to have. Not that grim and gritty tones are bad (the Dark Knight Trilogy did it very well), but they tend to lay it so thick it gets suffocating. The reason why Marvel movies get so much praise compared to the DC movies is because they don't take themselves as seriously and are most often actually pretty light and colorful in tone. What I've seen so far of Wonder Woman looks closer to a Marvel movie in its feel than a DC one.

That doesn't mean there is no correlation between the quality of a movie's writing and its box office gross. It all comes down to if it can catch enough people's attention so they'll watch it, and a compelling story spreads through word of mouth (and good reviews). Movies like Elektra and Catwoman had no real draw to them. Elektra didn't try to explain what it was about at all, and Catwoman was solely "Halle Berry is so sexy, isn't she?"
The Last Airbender did not turn a profit, by the way. It made back its production costs (but just barely), but it did not make back its marketing and distribution costs. The film was also noticeably more popular in countries where the TV show did not air or wasn't popular (in proportion to the number of theaters that showed it), like The Philippines or Russia, which leads me to believe that The Last Airbender was a better movie if you went in with no knowledge of its source material (kind of like with 90's American Godzilla--that movie, too, was much more liked in countries for whom that movie was their first exposure to the franchise).

If you've only HEARD that Elektra, Catwoman and Supergirl '84 were bad, why not just rent and see for yourself?
(There, that should move the discussion on a little more quickly... )
Although the first two examples are why Marvel still insists on doing that Scarlett Johansson "solo Black Widow spinoff" that no fan wants:
Ie. the project dated back to Iron Man 2 critically falling short with fans, causing Paramount to do what all misogynistic non-comic-fan studios to do when they can't understand why a comic movie disappointed: "The fanboys probably just wanted more of the sexy babe! "
As for the current Warner/DC....they've got enough of their own problems already.

Why not? They've ruined Green Lantern's first film.

They were too busy trying to make a TV show which never got off the ground.

I'd be shocked if this stigmatism still exists given the success of film's like Mulan, Beauty & The Beast, & Zootopia.

Something that gets hella funny when you see the criticism the Marvel Animated Universe gets because characters break the fourth wall or do goofy things.
