I have never seen anything from this franchise, but given that it seems to be a fairly episodic thing, can I assume I can watch this new series without too much knowledge of the past stuff?

This part of the article is incorrect. "Del Rey published seven out of nine volumes of the first Hell Girl manga." They published all 9 volumes. The last volume they released was an omnibus volume with volumes 7, 8, and 9 in one volume.

Hah, looks like i was half right about it. Omori is actually back in the directing seat for this but Studio Deen is also back.
Thats actually even better.

I don't think so. I've only seen the first season but I believe it starts going pretty heavy into some backstories later on which may be a part of the upcoming story.

Hell no, it's a need for this series, basically because of the main heroine backstory. And well, it's not like you can't - that's really excellent series.

With there only being six new episodes, I feel it's more likely to stick to episodic stories (with the episodic client and target getting focus) than going into anything deep on Ai herself. I wonder what the "reminiscence" episodes will be, though, and whether they'll air before or in between the new episodes. If they are just unaltered reairings of episodes from the original seasons, then it seems likely they'll pick ones that are more episodic and don't require full-season knowledge (maybe none from the third season at all).

Studio Deen really has had a resurgence as of late in quality of their animes. Looking forward to the new series

12... not within the usual 25 episode series of the past Jigoku Shoujos. I hope there will be a correction on a later date.

Other than knowing the basic premise of Jigoku Shojo, someone new to the series does not 'need' to watch the first seasons.
Seems like this new season is six new stories and six background/re-cap episodes(we'll have wait to see).

Jigoku Shojo while episodic at first, does have a overarching theme/story.The 2nd & 3rd seasons are very much story driven.
So it would not be a waste of time if you just watched the older seasons first but again you do not 'need' to.

It won't things are a lot different nowadays a lot less 25 episodes series', also i'd imagine this is a tester at least partly to see if people are still interested.

I remember watching this show way back when Funimation had the license. I liked the dub, too bad I never finished it or got the set before their license expired.

Classic good news/bad news scenario. Six new eppies is great. Six recap eppies, not so much.

I've always wanted to see a western version of this concept made into a live action TV series. I love watching police procedural shows, The idea of a vengeful ghost procedural where the ghost scopes out people and investigates them before she take the job is very awesome.

Well this is unexpected, of all the 2000s anime that need a sequel Hell Girl gets one (Geez make Marimite 5th season already Deen).

I used to enjoy the hell (no pun intended) out of Hell Girl in my first years of getting in anime and it was one of my favorite. Eventually, I grew tired of how formulaic it becomes, the second season is the best one out of three though.

I probably still watch it, and notice how the last two incorporate new technology and adulthood of one of the main characters in season one, this will too.
