Funny that everyone has been talking about Pokemon trying to catch up with the Yokai Watch craze. With the new series and how they seemed to have de-aged Ash and gone for a more kid friendly art style. Yet no one talks about Digimon seems to be following Pokemon in suite in trying to catch Yokai Watch as well. I watched the first episode and was it terrible. The stupid cellphone digivices, the designs are terrible, they aren't even called digimon anymore they are called appmons now and lastly they had a digimon, because seriously fudge appmons, that was just three emoji faces on top of each other.

At least Digimon Universe has excuse to do so, when they hired the same person for series composition who is doing the same for Yo-Kai Watch. Besides, Digimon did not de-aged the main hero, like Pokémon seems to do. On the contrary, actually, if you don't count Tri, Haru is, along with Taiki from Xros Wars (who, however, did not look and act on his age), 13 years old, which is second oldest for goggle boy in Digimon, the only older being Masaru from Savers (though he did not wear goggles, but you know what I mean). On the other hand, if Xros Wars is any indication, then having old character may not necessary mean mature story, but who knows, maybe we'll be surprised.

It doesn't bother me that much with Appmon because Appmon is being marketed as a spin off of Digimon and not actual Digimon whereas with Pokemon, it's the main series that's doing such a radical redesign. Also, every season of Digimon has its own unique style and the series is very clear they're not connected to each other and we should accept it as a reboot. Digimon also still has the Tri movies for fans of the traditional Digimon format to still watch if you don't like the new series any. With Pokemon, you're kind of stuck with this new style for at least until the next generation of games comes out. Also Digimon is just better than Pokemon. Razz

Appmon has been pretty good so far, and I've been checking out the datamining people have been doing with the toys and game demo. Feels like a new Kamen Rider/Precure series with all the spoilers thanks to the toys.

The complaints about stuff ripping off Yokai Watch and stuff seem really ignorant. Satoshi was not "de-aged" nor is either of these shows ripping off Yokai Watch. I'd reccomend at least watching this video before making rash comments on the subject: https://youtu.be/rrBH3IYRjaw

I wonder if people making the claims even watch all these shows enough to make a valid comparison. Nothing about Appmon or Sun and Moon strike me as "Yokai Watchish"

I felt like the new Pokemon style looked more like One Piece to me than Yokai Watch and I assumed they were capitalizing on the success of One Piece with the whole ocean theme of the new series. With Appmon, I thought the designs looked more like Yugioh Arc V than it did Yokai Watch. But I ended up enjoying Appmon a lot even though I was initially pretty skeptical of it myself and I thought Haru and Gatchmon are great lead characters with a lot of fun chemistry going for them.

Anyway, in regards to the main subject of this article, since Toei seems to be marketing Appmon as a multi platform franchise, I hope this means we'll be getting this 3DS game in the U.S. I've actually never got to play the Digimon games before. Most of them are on Sony systems and I've always been a loyal Nintendo fan so I never played Sony systems before, so I haven't gotten the chance to play a Digimon game, and this game looks pretty fun.

To be quite honest, the main fact they decided to send Ash to school after almost twenty years, when Yo-Kai Watch is beating Pokémon in both games and anime and one of its main theme is to deal with school life, is good indication for many fans (me included) that they went with Yo-Kai Watch route in anime.

As for de-aging of Ash, I hate to tell you this, but he was de-aged in every single new series so far, with only exception being AG, though none took it to such a big extreme as BW did and I really strongly want to hope SM will not be the one to beat BW in that, but from what I've heard about SM anime so far, I have my doubts, unfortunately.

Edit: As for Digimon Universe, I see more influences being taken from Megaman NT Warrior, Net Ghost PiPoPa and the above mentioned Yu-Gi-Oh Arc V, but I still see some influence from Yo-Kai Watch as well (come on, Appmon being turned to "medals" and summoned by device, is clear inspiration of Yo-Kai Watch). But I don't really complain, I like Digimon Universe so far.

A school setting is not exactly rare for anime, and it's not as if school is a huge focal point in YW to begin with. Satoshi has gone to school before in previous series. He was never de-aged though, he's always been 10 and every series usually begins with "Satoshi from Masara Town, 10 years old" to establish him.

The only real Yokai Watchish show airing right now is Kamiwaza Wanda. It has little creatures that cause problems for people's daily lives that the main character has to find using a flashlight like device. Very similar to the premise to YW. Any other comparisons like school or two characters have pink hair seem superficial in the same kind of logic people used back in the day to say Digimon is a rip-off of Pokemon. It takes more than monsters or cards to be a rip off.

Actually, I remember hearing, back in early 2000s, that the reason Digimon switched from Adventure setting to Tamers card game setting was fuelled by Yu-Gi-Oh success. I don't really believe it, but one must wonder.

As for Ash being de-aged, it's actually more than the physical age, it's also how the character is behaving, as I mentioned with the comparison between Haru and Taiki, who, are both 13 years old, yet Haru feels more 13 years so far than Taiki did through the whole Xros Wars. And for Ash, BW Ash was the least mature then any other before and after and felt even less than 10. And, incidentally, BW was the only one to mention Ash is still 10 years old (which, BTW, caused quite an uproar amongst Pokémon fans).

And, while Ash went to school before, it was only for episode or two, not the whole span of the series, as it seems to be now, which is what marks this so different and why some thinks it's Pokémon way to go Yo-Kai Watch route.
