This is one reason why I really like Gumball. This show is an animator's dream show. This show has so many art and animation styles it allows animators to play to their strengths or to try something new.

I was looking forward to this episode all week after seeing the clips and I was hoping ANN would have something on it. So it wasn't the US animators... but loved it complete with visual Dragonball and sly Naruto and Karate Kid references (did you catch it?). Almost every anime cliche' in the book (even fan service!) but that's what made it so funny.

This is why this is the best show on Cartoon Network outside of Adult Swim anymore. I'd go so far as to say that it's better than all the shows in CN's heyday of Cartoon Cartoons.

Having said that, that was really well done. I would start watching it if it was using that style throughout the show

It's 2016 and anime parodies in cartoons are still poorly accented dubbing with kung-fu stuff? At least it's animated by a Japanese studio I guess? But those designs look like weird DeviantArt animefications.

Yeah, that, I feel, is Gumball's greatest charm and is the sort of show that's only recently been possible. The sheer amount of mixed media is absolutely insane, and now they can add Studio 4C to that list.
If you like what you see, I recommend seeing at least one episode of the TV show to see their use of mixing media. The main characters have thick-line animation, but the backgrounds are photorealistic (though whether they use 3-D CGI, miniatures, or composite photographs depends on the shot), and other characters range from 3-D CGI to card stock to Muppets-style puppets to stop-motion clay to live-action. The 2-D animated characters can take any conceivable style, from imitation of old black-and-white cartoons to the comic-book influenced style of 80's Saturday Morning action shows. To an extent, Courage the Cowardly Dog did this too, but not nearly to an extreme as Gumball. Having Studio 4C do a genuine anime short to splice into an episode fits right within the character design team's insanity, and genuine anime was one of the few types of animation the series had not yet done until now.
No, of those two combatants, only Nicole is a cat. The other character's species is unconfirmed (but probably not a human, as there are no humans in the series). |

Anywho, Gumball's great. Great voice acting, sharp visuals style, fun animation, and it's probably the only children's show that portrays new media in a way that feels real and not having the "fellow kids" stank all over it. |
