I remember when Media Blasters apparently hid their announcement that they licensed Moribito as an Easter Egg on one of their DVDs... At least, that's what I recall; I could be wrong.

Anyway, I think any & all Easter Eggs should just be done by inputting a variant of the Konami Code. It's easy to remember, iconic, and simple to test out.

As far as I know, only a few of my DVDs had Easter Eggs on them, and upon finding them I would come away with the impression that it was a lot of effort for something that most people would probably watch once. I certainly enjoy extras, but they tend to interest me only on the initial viewing. After that, I just want to rewatch the show or movie.

"I don't know if anyone else has ever programmed an easter egg into an anime Blu-ray"

There's at least one. Free! ES last volume has one which when access plays all the End Cards plus one NEW one as a little "movie".

DVD and Blu-ray both have it. And even though I know what the steps are (a Japanese fan posted the steps and video on tumblr), I can't get it to happen in my stand alone players but I could access the file on the DVD via computer disc player.

Funimation's ES release included this egg as a regular (not hidden) extra on it's North American release.

Noein, the original Manga entertainment, had English bloopers as Easter Eggs. It's a good way to have bonus content but don't want to officially advertise it.

Special endings, that "one thing during production no one wants to talk about", goofs and gaffs. Or outright oddities, of course. Special Features are their own are disappearing, thanks to streaming; Even trailers these days seem half hearted to me.

Best "Easter Egg that should have been an Easter Egg": The original Haruhi Suzumiya bloopers that were only shown for cons, you know, "What kind of fetish do you have?". What was done: I'd have to check but didn't season 2 have the 7/7/7 video as a hidden bonus? [checked] It did!

The problem I ran into was that not all DVD players reacted the same way. Easter Eggs I could routinely open with an older DVD player simply would not open after I had to replace it.

I was probably one of the people who found those Time Of Eve items while ripping the BD without realizing they were supposed to be hidden Anime smile + sweatdrop
Sorry I wasted your effort, but I can't watch BDs on Linux without ripping to harddisk first.

I also remember a time when there was "extra" content on a DVD by putting it in your computer. I am pretty sure the old CPM Utena movie was like that. And I think that is also a feature we don't really see anymore.

A lot of my older CPM DVDs have those. Off the top of my head, Tokyo Babyon and all the VOTOMS stuff. Sometimes, you even got bonus manga on them.

I remember there was an easter egg on some of the ah my goddess dvds (both on the OVA and the TV series iirc)

but my favorite Easter Egg is the "Last Disk" short AnimEigo made for Urusei Yatsura vol. 50. It's so silly but I know if I worked on putting out 50 (+ the OVAs & movies) discs for an old show like UY, I would certainly celebrate

This infamous little rant is easily my favorite Easter egg of all time. For the uninitiated: if you fired up the final disk of ADV's Eva Platinum set, episode 26 had four separate audio tracks. There were the usual English and Japanese audio, plus (I think) a commentary track for the episode, but then there was one that appeared to be totally blank...until you made it to the credits. If I was stuck playing a character like Shinji for that many episodes, I'd probably need to vent as much as Spike Spencer did too. Very Happy

(And crap, now I'm gonna have to pour through all those Time of Eve menus to find that extra. Smile)

Them going away is no real loss for me. If they included deleted scenes or anything beyond high school project hijinks, I would care more.

I wouldn't go through all that trouble to HIDE content from my intended audience.

Unless, of course, the intended audience is people who enjoy looking for hidden items.
