Sweeping generalizations are usually wrong. And that is surely true of "People don't read literature anymore." In the USA there are plenty of educated people who do. See, e.g., the many reviews of literature in the "New York Review of Books." Or check Amazon.com for reviews of known literary books.
Ditto in Japan, apparently, since the very premise of this show is that there is social status to be gained by appearing knowledgeable about literature. |
