Shirobako actually got me to watch some of Mizushima's older OVA work (Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan and Magical Witch Punie-chan) and he really is good at comedy. While Shirobako is funny there is also this undercurrent of being only hit show or missed deadline away from utter failure and poverty. Also, Zuka was my favorite of the girls so to see her story end how it did was sweet.

I enjoyed the show, but I dunno about praising it as a comedy, the joke are few and far between, you get maybe 3-4 per episode with a few episode completely devoid of them. Most of them land well, but this isn't a show that had me laughing out lound so much as smiling here and there.

Man, it would be cool if someone applied Shirobako's framework to say a U.S. anime company so we could see a comedic behind the scenes like making licensing deals, marketing via conventions, dubbing work, creating a package product, and dealing with fandom.

As it happens, the second half was the weaker half for me because it did more of the things from the first half, only with less tension because they were no longer at financial risk. More whimsy. More drama. More cute girls doing aerobics on the roof. More of those annoying mascot characters who were suddenly everywhere. That mentally handicapped girl who could communicate with squawks. As someone whose eyes instinctively start rolling when the music starts playing & the anime girls start crying, it was a less enjoyable half for me.

This is one of those anime that I'm disappointed Sentai licensed instead of NISA or Funimation. Now we'll forever be stuck with a Shirobako release that's missing the Third Girls Aerial Squad, Exodus, and Andes Chucky OVAs. Seeing all the characters work hard to make these anime and then not seeing the result of it, it's just not the same. Shirobako deserved a premium release.
Well, I suppose we should be glad it wasn't Aniplex or PonyCanyon so it's at least not unaffordable.

I doubt the apparently more frugal NISA would have been able to get the OVA's. Funimation frequently gets OVA's in their releases, but I am not sure if they were interested in licensing Shirobako in the first place.

And I had no idea there was also an OVA for Andes Chucky.

And ironically If Shirobako belonged to any of those 2 companies, they would probably have gotten those inconsequential OVA's.

It's only the themesong, and I just remembered it was also used as the ending of ep.19, so that one's probably included.

Yes. That ED sequence is indeed included in Sentai's release.

easily the best anime of last year IMO (I count anime for the year they ended...makes more sense to only judge a finished product)

Still can't believe Sentai did not do a dub for this show. Just baffles me that doesn't deserve a dub to them but other shows like Battle Girls, Diabolik Lovers, & Shining Hearts get one. Then again I'm still baffled why Fruit of Grisaia never got one. Whatever. Still plan on buying this. This has been one of the best character driven series for me in the recent years. Easily top 10 probably top 5 for me.

As far as I can think of, maybe Sentai has issues with dubbing the show mostly in translations. Like, I really adored Haikyu and Kuroko no Basket, but then I just couldn't imagine either of them being dubbed without getting hammy at some point. Some lines in these shows are pretty exclusively Japanese for what they are worth, which just won't come the same way if dubbed.

At least the release is still more affordable than if it should be released by Aniplex or PonyCanyon (a lacking of both OVAs is sad, though). Definitely keeping this in my shelf.

EDIT: As for the review, the humor being a really strong point seem exaggerated. Sure there are occasionally powerful jokes here and there (see episode 23), but they can be more like a hit-or-miss to me. I'd also like to rack up the ratings for musical score to a B+ as these scores pretty much nail the atmosphere. That aside, Shirobako is sooooo deserving of an A+ story-wise, for every other reasons listed.

i was disapointed that it wasn't the episode of Third Girls Aerial Squad where that freelancer did all those nice backgrounds for that girls home town.

As I said when the first half was released, including Exodus and Third Girls couldn't have cost more than a few dollars per disc. I only wish that companies like Sentai took discussions like this one seriously enough to discuss their decision-making process with those of us who care.

For those looking for the Andes Chucky ED, it is up on YouTube. If you don't know Chucky's lineage, it's based on the "Fables of the Green Forest" series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fr5Lu3eQGMc. Perhaps surprisingly, those stories were written by Massachusetts native Thornton Burgess.

I understand the desire to discuss the decision-making process, but it would pretty much always come down to "we believe (based on our experience and data) that the sales wouldn't justify it and/or the rights holder wouldn't give it to us without a crazy amount of money because they're worried about reverse importation." I doubt it would ever end the discussion.
