I'll agree that this is the volume that got me hooked on the series, and it is a very fun, action packed bunch of chapters. I personally like the arc in the next couple volumes better, and it shows how great Akamatsu's writing can be. I'm a bit less enthusiastic about the most recently published (thru Crunchyroll) chapters, as they seem to be bringing in Negima's weaker aspects, but UQ Holder can be really, really good.

Kirie, on the other hand, is arrogant, smug, snarky, strategically minded, and dedicated to her own individual goals.

So you're saying she's Negima's Chao Lingshen at a fraction of everything interesting with no fighting ability, no magic ability, no technical ability and no connection to the main character? Check.

And I'd love to hear about these recent "weaker" Negima aspects because I thought the shounen style stuff like the "epic" fights and tournaments were the weaker parts. Comedy, harem, romance, fantasy, horror, science fiction, what? I'll take any of those over "action".

Character driven comedy? That would be golden. Of course, he'd have to add characters first, wouldn't he?

Nah, that's not an accurate comparison. If a comparison has to be made to a Negima character, it would probably be the pig-tailed library girl (sorry, there's like 30 girls and i don't remember all their names). The reviewer's point was that she had a distinct personality compared to the other side characters. Hey, i like Chao Lingshen too, but if you're going to judge characters by comparing them to her then you may as well hate every villain because they're not Dio Brando.

The stuff i was referring to were:
1. Using ~12 year-old girls for cheesecake fanservice
2. Sidelining the plot for comedic interludes that result in a character having a crush on the MC
3. Every female character developing a crush on the (12-year-old) protagonist
etc.

To me, Negima had the problem of having great writing for both plot and characters... and then he'd have a character assaulted by a tentacle monster, or have the robot climax by having (the 12 year old) Negi "wind her up". It's just a tonal dissonance i couldn't really take.

The library girl part makes me think Nodoka, though she didn't have pigtails. Maybe you're talking about Yue, who was Nodoka's best friend and also part of the library group?

And no, I'd say Kirie is more of a Chisame type. She certainly snarky enough, and her relationship with Touta gradually evolves to what Chisame had with Negi.

I agree that this volume is where the storyline really kinda hits its stride, especially with spoiler[Fate] showing up in the last couple of chapters. Really solid fight here and the next couple of volumes are pretty good as well.

However, I'd also say that the latest chapters up on Crunchyroll have been leaving quite a bit to be desired, especially after all those teases regarding the greater plot being pushed aside for more fanservice stuff... Yeah, that's what Akamatsu is known for, but really, why tease us for a couple of pages and then leave us hanging like that for more cliched harem shenanigans?

Dang it, you're completely right. I was referring to Yue, but Chisame is the much better comparison. And yeah, i agree with you about the recent chapters. Why does Akamatsu have to tease us like this?! He showed us friggin spoiler[JACK RAKAN] for crying out loud, and he jumps into a wave runner race? WHYYYYY

true but you should be more than glad that akamastu didn't go down the sister complex scenario cause if you had read the manga it would show somewhat that negi clearly have a thing for nekane and even kissed chisame in his sleep thinking she was his big sister. better believe more or less some fans especially those that arent into brother/sister complexes would have cried bloody murder if that had happened.

Tota's two prior companions have proven to be fairly bland characters so far - Kuromaru is basically just “stoic swordsman who likes Tota,” while Karen is just “stoic swordswoman who doesn't like Tota.”

cant be surprised by that. karen is more or less becoming HQ Holder's version of the otaku community most despised man hating lesbian kuroko shirai. at least she's not in the same man hating lesbian level ala nina einstein otherwise tota probably would be dead already or at least incapacitated to the point where he wont be in the way to get even closer to yukihime aka evangeline.
