The teaser art looks pretty cool, but this better not be yet another one of those games that have awesome character art but then the in-game graphics are so chibi-fied it looks like it belongs with an entirely different game. Bravely Default and Exist Archive were so disappointing when it came to that.

That image has been on the Terra Battle website for a while, I'm guessing its the console version that was promised forever ago

That's how they save money since they don't typically have Western budgets. It's kinda like those "cheats" that anime studios use. They give ya awesome artworks since those won't cost too much - just draw and it's done. But where it'll cost a lot is the in-game graphics where they have to make sure it looks good throughout the game. Instead, by making drawings of the in-game graphics, they just let the gamers imagine what the characters could look like, without them actually having to code the in-game graphics to actually look like what the characters are supposed to look like. It's a nifty "cheat." |

With the gray coloring and the art design, the guy kind of looks like Zael from The Last Story. *Gasp*... Is it a sequel!?!

Another thing to consider is that games like Bravely Default are on handheld systems. The screens are small, so a game that uses full-sized, realistically-proportioned characters might be hard to recognize, especially when far away. That big-headed chibi style makes it much easier for the player to recognize characters. They do this in Pokémon games too, and Pokémon games have a near-unlimited budget. |

With those particular handheld titles, yes. But they do the same thing even with PS3/PS4 games where there's no technical limitations. The in-game graphics look so crude compared to the artworks. |

True, on home consoles there wouldn't really be much need to keep them chibi. Might be an artifact of tradition too: That style needs fewer polygons, which was necessary in 5th, and to a smaller extent 6th generation home consoles.

People complaining about character designs not matching promotional material or character art?
Taking it back to the 1980's it seems. |

This time hopefully with playable cast=o. Seriously, the online on that game was awesome thanks to having multiple playing styles. Playing Mirania was cool. Shame they didn't replicate that for the man story. Anyway The last story was pretty great (Xenoblade tops it though) but oh so linear and a bit too cut scene heavy. If they produce a sequel I hope it wil be a bit more free-er like Tales of Symphonia was. |

More like 1990's - that seems like where the character designs are stuck, methinks. |

That piece of art dates back to at least 2009. Apparently it was also used in Terra Battle. I guess it's just Mistwalker's go-to placeholder image.
