Heh, Greg Werner, huh?
I figured Sanji would be back within this arc, but I didn't expect a full flashback so soon. I did suspect something was up with how incomplete Sanji's flashback in the Baratie arc was compared to the other Straw Hats' flashbacks though. Did Oda plan for this too?
As for my explanation for "Only Alive," I already posted it on TV Tropes, here it is: The Marines are desperate for someone who can cook well. They are tired of eating bad food and will bring in a pirate as their chef if it means they can eat better. If someone turns in Sanji alive, the World Government intends to pay the bounty, then offer Sanji a job as their executive chef with an appropriate salary as long as he teaches World Government and Marine cooks how to make better food and to disassociates himself with pirates. Sanji would never take such an offer though. This is not an entirely serious prediction, of course, and I don't expect it to be the correct one.

Check out the "Prince Sanji" theory, it seems pretty plausible to me and many others.

Yeah, I know about the Prince Sanji theory, but it'd be hilarious for it to be something comparatively petty and dumb like this. Eiichiro Oda has been known to troll his readers on occasion, like what happened to Magellan, though yeah, I doubt he'd do something like that to such an important character.

I doubt thats it but that is pretty funny and I wouldn't put it pass Oda for something like that to come to mind. I've heard of the prince theory too but we'll see. I'm not exactly the speculatory type, even if it is fun to do every once and a while.

Sanji's not the only character who's been MIA since the midpoint in The Dressrosa arc (I'm behind on the manga, so I know we're past Dressrosa arc manga-wise).
Apart from Sanji, I miss Chopper! (he too, along with Nami and Brook w/Momo have been MIA a LONG TIME)
Anyway, back to Sanji: Since we knew some of his backstory early on, I guess we're going back even further since before he met Zeff, and possibly find out why he keeps one of his eyes hidden.
I also wonder if we'll see how he learned his kick-only fighting style [from Zeff most likely], that was the only part of his initial backstory we've never seen, well that and when he took up smoking, I imagine it came from being rejected by the women he pursues, that's my best guess.

The rest of the characters you mentioned are not MIA anymore.

Sanji mentioning that he is from north blue in the jaya arc is interesting. I feel Oda planned this from the beginning but he wanted to reveal it at the right time. I think this is a perfect time for a Sanji arc.

Bloody hell 2 years, being one of the original members, the ones he got from East Blue, it has been strange not having him around.

You think Sanji's disappearance is bad, try being a "Hunter x Hunter" fan that likes Kurapika and Leorio.

Sanji's flashback during the Baratie arc confirms that Sanji's capoeira-like approach is something he learned from Zeff, who practices the very same martial art. The idea is that a chef's hands are delicate and should not be used for something as forceful as direct attacks (as flimsy of an excuse that is, it's something Sanji deeply believes).

Or anyone else in that series, considering this present hiatus is by far the longest yet and might actually be permanent this time.

Wow. Sanji is 1a and 1b with Zoro on that crew. Leaving him out of the storyline for that long seems ridiculous.

Lol at the article.

They at least came back in 2014. Killua and Gon are all gone now (though, Gon had one appearance). Needless to say, 2015 is the worst year for HunterXHunter.

We can already guess this part: pay attention to which way each of his eyebrows spirals in the first and second parts of the series.
I'm only current with the anime, so I'm not really clear on the time gap being referenced, but the Straw Hats need their ero-cook, and it'll be nice to get some more Sanji background, since he was one of the only Straw Hats who never really got a proper origin story. Now the only real holdout is Zoro, and in my mind he needs one even more than Sanji did. Even if we didn't know why Sanji was originally serving on that ship, at least he had his time with Zeff. What does Zoro get? "Oh hey, I'm a kid who wants to be a badass swordsman, and whoops my best friend died by falling down some stairs. C'mon, Oda, throw the guy more of a bone than that.
