I bet the movie is digitally distributed to the theaters, with softsubs, and it's the fault of old firmware on some of the theaters' projectors.

I literally just got back from the theater and the subs worked fine at my showing. But to all those who have seen the movie, I have but one question:
"Do you not like single mothers?" |

this happened at the theater I went to, lasted a good chunk of the movie to compensate everyone, the theater issued out free passes for another movie visit

can people just watch it raw? or use their smart phone for translation
i thought they have those apps where you can just speak into the phone in one language and it will interpret it back to you in your native language.. so plug in the headphones and continue to enjoy the movie ?

I saw it at 7:30 last night and this didn't happen. It was overall a nice experience with a low-ish turnout with the exception of some overzealous jerks who couldn't be quite. That was the real issue! They just kept talking, cheering, laughing, pointing at Titans and having a exclamation at certain revelations.... I wanted to go over there and punch 'em.
It was hard to appreciate and enjoy the "Do you not like single mothers?"-scene (amongst others) when you have inconsiderate jerks having to exclaim, "Ah, hell no!" and keep questioning for the appearance of Levi. (I personally never understood the like for him anyways.) |

So looks like FUNi's Ranpo Kitan subs issue made its way into theaters. Way to go FUNimation...

There is absolutely zero defending of this, and FUNi just damaged their relationship with those movie theaters. Why bother to play a movie that won't even work properly, causing headaches for theater management and employees (And it doesn't turn out pretty, I know from personal experience) because the distributor doesn't give a shit? |

Hold up a second, we know that this issue didn't effect every screening, only some of them. And we don't know who actually made the Digital Cinema Package that were sent to the theaters, either... I would bet that Funi provided the master and subtitle data, but it probably wasn't them who created the data sent to the theaters, rather it would be the distribution company they hired. It could be old firmware in certain theaters that couldn't handle the soft-subs, or it could be some non-standard encoding that the distro-used, but it seems a stretch to blame funimation directly for it... And anyway, how many people in the theater REALLY needed subs for this anyway  ?

Who's fault is it for hiring them?
And who's fault is it for picking said theaters without checking their equipment?
Just like a graphic designer or film editor, you have to check to see if majority of any equipment you desire for it to playback on is able to properly play them. And it seems the theaters and Funimation didn't have a lot of cooperation to find or emulate this issue before premiere. There acting like a game company throwing money at a outside studio for an untested PC port imo. |

Not sure you fully understand what you are asking. There is no way Funimation would be able to do that. Most of the showings are at independent theaters. |
