Why on earth would this get a physical release on the Dreamcast? The system has been dead for over a decade. It seems extremely random, although I'm sure there's some purpose behind it that the article fails to mention, so please fill me in.

There's always enthusiasts. Once in a while, a game drops even for the original Amiga...
That said, personally, if I received a physical dreamcast disc I wanted to play, I'd rip it and use an emulator for it. That hurdle's been past a long time ago.
But as there's a PC version for this, there's really no reason for such measures. It's just something nice they're providing for the real enthusiasts to enjoy. Smile

The Dreamcast still gets one or two games a year from indie developers, usually in small-print limited edition runs that end up on Ebay for twice their original asking price within three or four years' time. It doesn't cost much of anything to develop a game for a dead system and you can burn a Dreamcast disc on any Windows system with a simple CD burner. More importantly, you'll almost always make your money back if you make a game for the Dreamcast nowadays.

There's a surprisingly large (and more importantly, surprisingly active) community of Dreamcast collectors out there, and we've gotten used to paying 50 bucks a pop for games on our favorite system. If I was being cynical, I'd say that someone working for this company has noticed that Dreamcast-related kickstarters like Piers Solar, Redux: Dark Matter, and Elysian Shadows almost ALWAYS get funded, and is now trying to give this 16-bit game a cash injection.

I loved this as a kid but even the nostalgia fanboy in me has to admit this looks like crap. Haven't they been working on this off and on for like half a decade or more now? I feel like it's comes up once every two years or so.

Best of luck to them though. If the community funds it, god bless em.

This seems kind of cool. The series is something I'd always wanted to get around to watching, and if the game is made to be difficult it could be the kind of thing I really like.

Since I'm a backer, I'll tell you the reason. Originally Dreamcast version was a stretch goal, but apparently Chris Strauss got so many requests to make it a main goal from the Dreamcast community(there are as mentioned in other posts at least 2 or 3 new Dreamcast games a year from indie devs and there are at least 4 that could still come out for 2015) that it was made available if it gets funded.

It seems like about half the funding is coming from those who want a Dreamcast version(and I pledged for the $49 Dreamcast tier myself). Strauss also has shared that while he was at Nintendo of Europe, he and his coworkers would often play the Dreamcast on breaks. It kinda also fits into his vision of doing a 16-bit style game done on a classic platform(although there would also be a 3DS and PC version). The $150,000 Wii U stretch goal seems a bit out of reach at the moment, but it still looks good to get funding as it is close to 40%($30,000) with 3 weeks left.

It may be dead as far as the actual official interest market goes, but there are people who still own the system and fervently play it to this day, despite the unfortunate and undeserved fate that befell it. The same can be said of many "dead to the market" systems, like the PSP. There are some enthusiasts that develop for those old systems, and they always have potential customers willing to pay for it.
