I wish Funi hadn't taken over 2 years to officially release because that was the title I had to see released the most for 2014.

Of course one of the weakest Cyborg 009 anime gets released while the rest doesn't. Its all about the CGI...

I remember watching the trailers for this and I was hyped about the background detail while disappointed by the character modeling in the trailers. Did the movie had better looking models like Appleseed Deus Ex, or is it the same? I've always had a problem with Sanzigen's 3d cgi stuff.
Are the character's actions animated in full or are they done in frames like in Expelled from paradise?

Gotta love how Funi insults those kinds of shows out of one side of their mouth, while asking us to spend money on their releases of said shows from the other side.

Funi doesn't release many of those shows. Hell, there's Soul Eater Not as of late, and that's it I think?

While not as much as Sentai they still release those kind of shows often. For example, the recent Hyperdimension Neptunia. The moe tropes in that franchise is intentionally forced which is part of the appeal of that show/games.

This movie is aggressively bad. A pretentious, muddled mess, a completely desperate attempt by Kamiyama to follow in his mentor Oshii's footsteps in directing style. It's not just a huge slap to the face to the Cyborg 009 franchise and legacy, but it's a deeply unpleasant movie in of itself. Just a complete disaster by any standard. It's an ugly stain of a film.

Honestly not crazy about the look of this project, but I trust Kamiyama enough after GITS SAC, moribito and Eden of the east to pick up basically anything he puts out, jewelry aside.

It's a pity that you didn't provide examples to back up your opinion. (true, you would have had to use spoiler tags; but even so)

The main antagonist is literally God, and they "defeat" him by begging him to stop doing what he's doing. After 100 minutes of droning theological debate and other bullcrap dressed up with the odd action scene or two. And part of the plot revolves around an angel skeleton.
Any further elaboration would cause ordinary people to start to convulse.

^I believe this is the one you and Kadmos1 gave me input about when I asked in May. I believe you quoted it as:
Quote: | It has this phony, affected, pompousness to it. It pretends to be intellectually complex and it it's really just a lot of wankery. It's all the excesses of Oshii at his worst, but coming from his protege, instead.
I mean, it's Cyborg 009, FFS, and they're trying to throw in all this unnecessary symbolism that tries to make it weighty but fails to out of the sheer absurdity of the plot and concepts, and more specifically the execution.
It's just a complete disaster and an embarrassment for the franchise. |
You also mentioned it might be worth checking out as a curiosity, if anything. I am a tad curious.

Many, many pieces of media feature deities or almighty beings as the antagonist (Xenoblade and Final Fantasy VI to name a couple). Are they all pretentious for doing so too?
