So three reactions I had to this:

1) This is really, really not helping my envy of Japan for getting fun stuff like this.

2) The English lyrics weren't as clunky as I expected.

3) I, uh, don't actually ship Light/L. But this song kind of made me want to.

I quite like the English version of the song. Of course Junction is good as well. I wish that this would get an English version, but the odds are not very likely...

I was expecting to cringe but this actually sounds pretty rad.

Good musicals come from foreign composers, and we NEED a musical with J-rock rhythms but actually well-translated English lyrics.

(The stagings of Japanese musicals could use a bit of work, though, as we're not likely to see the Phoenix Wright or any of the new or old Sera Myu's on Times Square next to Kinky Boots any time soon.)

I'm familiar with Jeremy Jordan, but wasn't with Jarrod Spector before hearing this. It also somehow slipped my noticing that the composer for this was Frank Wildhorn. Really makes me wish there was a possibility they'd do an English version of this. I think I'm going to be obsessed with this song for a while.

I like the look of the humanized shinigami. I think it's a good choice instead of a clunky costume.

Wow, that was shippy. It was good, but as someone who never shipped Light & L, that was weird. I'd love to hear all the other English songs, though. I'm especially curious as to what they cooked up for Misa. I love demented love songs!

Could it be that we will have another good anime musical? That's a very rare thing.

Wow... That gave me some nice chills.

I would love for them to create an English OST even if we don't get the musical in English. I'd buy it. The lyrics came out really nice.

Lyrics:
Singer 1: Light
Singer 2: L
Both Singers

time to rethink and begin
with a brand new game plan
a margin for error is slim

he's on the brink, he could win
I can use the same plan
time to start thinking like him

what would I do if I got inside his head thought like him instead
could it be possibly I'll catch him when

I look through his eyes
see what he sees
and then improvise
until I can learn what puts him at ease
I'll walk in his shoes as long as it takes
till deep in my bones I'm sure he is
one and the same as the me who is playing his game

what does he do late at night
when the world is sleeping
does he see pixels not dreams

hard to be true, always right
all that promise keeping
harder I'm sure than it seems

how would it be if I saw the world like him like his synonym
bit by bit wit by wit catch him, I'd win

I mimic his will
and learn his routines
and feel the same thrill
whenever my end is served by his means
I'll walk in his shoes as long as it takes
till deep in my bones I'm sure he is
one and the same as the me who is playing his game

steady, I must be ever so careful
don't move until you are ready
he will be careful too

know it, always stay calm and collected
don't lose your cool or you'll blow it
then he will unravel you

get into his head
and under his skin
the things that he said
the food that he likes, the places he's been
I'll look through his eyes
and see what he sees
till I see the forest not just the trees

I'll mimic his will
and learn his routines
and feel the same thrill
and know what it means
I'll walk in his shoes as long as it takes
till deep in my bones I'm sure
I am winning my game while I'm saying
"I'm playing his game"

Thanks beverhousen and eternalblue81 for helping figure out a few lines!

Thanks for transcribing the lyrics! So, I interpreted Singer 1 (in red) as Light, and Singer 2 (blue) as L. I was really impressed by both singer's acting in the song, like they really felt the desperation of the characters (despite only doing this as a demo). I'd love to hear more of the musical in English. The writer's tapped into the core of Death Note's cat-and-mouse narrative, and I really want to hear what else they got right!

You're welcome! Though there is that one line I just can't seem to grasp.

If you look at the lyrics and view it as L being blue, L wouldn't say "like his cinnamon". But other than that one line I guess it could be Light and L. I could be mishearing that line though.
I also think this could be the two Lights, since from the Japanese footage it looks like they will both be on stage at the same time; I'm guessing one is the inner-voice of Light. We won't know for sure until it's preformed though.

They're both Broadway pros, as the status of Tony nominees proves. I'm not surprised. That attention to detail though makes me a little hopeful for an English adaptation if this song's reception goes well.

You and me both! Even if there isn't a musical adaptation, I'd definitely buy an English CD if they made one. I can't wait to hear the Japanese version of "第一弾 (First Shot)".

Oh thank god! Cinnamon was weird but that's what I was hearing. Thank you!
Synonym meaning KIRA, so yeah, it must be Light & L.

Hmm, it still doesn't sound right. I keep hearing "whenever my end is ~yada~yada~". I didn't even have the "is" in mine... Whoops. Still can't figure out the whole line.

Ah I think it may be, ''Whenever my end is served by his means''
