I agree, Goro can't really fit into his fathers' shoes, it's too much for the average director. If he has to direct, Goro should make the work his own and not live up to almost unrealistically legendary expectations.

Glad he's making this clear now. Regardless of your views towards Miyazaki Goro shouldn't be forced to follow in his fathers footsteps. Hell no child deserves that in general.

I've always felt sorry for Goro in the sense that I feel he must have a lot of pressure to match his father's work. I wish him the best of luck to his projects and hope that he does well and what he wants to do.

Well, he does know his limitations. I think it is still a great ability to put other people's ideas onto the screen and to breathe life in stories presented to him. That being said, quite a few of Ghibli recent filmswere less about original ideas and more about using other people's fiction as starting points, which was not always a bad thing. |

This is the correct attitude for him to hold about himself. Strive to be the best that you can but don't expect yourself to be above your father. True successors rarely occur within the next generation. He'll do fine with his own work, not trying to be a copycat of Hayao.

I really do respect Goro and his mindset regarding him and his father. He understands that what's important is that he strive to be the best HE can be, not attempt to outmatch his father. Because as most of us know, that's a near impossible task for anyone to overcome, let alone Goro. He seems like the kind of guy that isn't completely full of himself, and I can respect that. I have always felt bad for the guy because of the unfair comparisons between him and his father. And it is tragic because, judging from my own enjoyment of Poppy Hill, Goro does have talent and the ability to make good movies. I'm sure if his last name were different people would be much less harsh on him. I hope his future is bright and I look forward to his next anime! And Ronja as well, even though the animation will take some getting used to for me.

I find this totally legitimate. I'm a children's book illustrator and when people ask me if I do or would want to write my own books, I have to say no, that's not really where I feel my gift is. I'd rather be given an author's written work and contribute my art to it, interpreting it and extrapolating or adding details that I think viewers will enjoy. |
