This honestly isn't really much of a "reveal"; it's been Sanrio's angle towards Hello Kitty for a really long time, along with her name and living situation (which have been on the official website for years now). I suppose what's more newsworthy about it is that it was laid out so flatly and caught media attention, but there's really nothing new.

I'm not exactly into Hello Kitty, but I've known her last name and origins for a while because I spend too much time on the internet. I feel like people are reading way too much into this. That quote doesn't say anywhere that she's a human (which I've seen several news sites pointlessly report). They're just being pretentious. Like...crap, I can't think of a good example. Like those "don't just BRUSH, REACH!" commercials from 15 years ago. Yeah, that works.
As for her pet cat, well, it's sanrio. Sometimes things get weird. |

Sanrio, don't be silly, you can't call all the other characters Bears, dogs, and etc. and just because she's the main character call her just a "girl". Anthropomorphic animal people world: that is what the world of Hello Kitty is. Don't know why this is been made a major focus on so many news sites. :l |

I think the Mickey Mouse comparison best illustrates what they mean. When you think the words “cat” or “mouse”, you think of the animals, walking around on all four, acting like the animals. But when you think of “Hello Kitty” or “Mickey Mouse”, you think of the character, and while they have the features of the animal, you don’t think of them /as/ the animal.

Oh, and I thought they'll gonna say that Kitty is actually an alien -which happens to look like a cat- living in the newly remodeled post-apocalypse Earth, in neo Britain to be exact.
I think they're being silly here. Even if she's not walking four legs or purr, or she's talking like human etc, she is still based on a cat, Japanese bobtail to be exact, and I don't know why the PR was so tough on saying that she's not. If you don't want to call Kitty a cat, maybe you should work more on the design, like Kyubey which probably is a mix of bunny and cat and probably spoiler[satan. Oops no, that's Homura.] TBH when Charmy Kitty appeared I was really WTF at the idea of cat owning a cat pet. But again in Disney we have a talking dog and also a pet dog in the same universe, so... duh. Let's just accept the idea that Kitty is a new species of a cat which evolved to the point that it acts like human, and Charmy is a cat. |
