Oh please, please, please be the Mononoke TV series. That would be so amazing and really surprising.

I really hope this is the TV series, since it's easily one of my favorite anime. I'm not sure if I'll buy a DVD of it though; it got a Blu-Ray release in Japan, so I'd rather have it in HD.
However, I do know that some anime, even up to Mononoke's release were mastered in SD, so an upscaled Blu-Ray wouldn't provide a significant difference (for example, Baccano and Gurren Lagann). No matter how much I've looked, I can't find whether Mononoke was produced in HD, or if the Blu-Rays are just an upscale. Does anybody know? |

Oh, I truly hope this is THE Mononoke series (with Takahiro Sakurai as Kusuriuri)! I will absolutely pick it up if it is! =D

Woah, awesome news. I wonder if this will be sub or if there will be a dub. So far cinedigm has only released dubbed animes (except for the gkids releases) so i wonder what they'll do with this. Definitely want it though...if it is the Kenji Nakamura series. the price is pretty cheap though.

They're releasing Saint Seiya sub-only, it was confirmed last month by Right Stuf and also when they put the Sanctuary set on their own site. |

Wow, I never expected this series to get released as well as at a price point that low. I think I'll get this eventually since I liked what I saw so far (episodes 1 and 2).

Just a quick question: Did Yoshitaka Amano provide the character designs for this show? Because the designs do look very Amano-ish.

I think Amano did the character designs for Ayakashi, from which this show is spun off from, but that series had 3 stories in it with varying art styles. This series is based on the final story arc, directed by Kenji Nakamura. @NJ_ I didn't know that. I don't watch or really care too much about Saint Seiya, but its pretty interesting. Maybe they could do something with all the kids animes they're liscensing/released. Wishful thinking, I know. |

Yeah. It's the TV series. The good Australian anime company Siren Visual gave the Aussies this series in August of last year. Siren Visual is the company that licences what has never been before, like Higurashi and Chihayafuru. Right now they've even saved Monster.

If this is real, I will buy it. It is also listed on Amazon Canada with the same release date. It is labeled as an import, but that happens with a lot of anime by from companies such as Nozomi and Discotek.

I think most tv anime started to be released in native hd i think around 2008/2009. Mononoke's 2007, so i think it is still an sd upscale. That said, im just using estimated dates so im not 100% sure. |

The show was shot in 16:9 and telecast in "HI-VISION," the Japanese term for HDTV. The uploaded fansub on YouTube shows the HI-VISION logo.
The Japanese Blu-ray has the twelve Mononoke episodes and the earlier "Bake Neko" story in 720p. "Bake Neko" may have been shot at 480p and upscaled; without information on the original masters, it's impossible to judge. Also the use of the faux rice-paper backgrounds tends to make all the images a bit "smudgy" regardless of the resolution. |

So while the early Bakeneko arc was likely an upscale, Mononoke proper was done in HD? That makes the decision a bit more difficult. Then again, I wouldn't be losing too much if I went for the DVD, and some Mononoke is better than none.
Some digging I did discovered that the Blu-Ray box in Japan is published by the notoriously hard to deal with Kadokawa, so it's doubtful we'd get them at all! |
