Theres lots of magicla girl anime out there besides sailor moon but its like no ones reconizes them. Most people i know never went deeper in magical girl anime than sailor moon or think nada will measure up. but i found stuff that does or is even better.
Personally I love Wedding peach. It first started out shakey with me and i ended up falling for its love theme. Another is Magical DoReMi. Yes i know it 4krap and most fans in usa dont like the dub but its all i seen and i love it. Most magical girls i seen before then were teen girls. Tokyo mew mew aka mew mew power was alos taken by them. it resparked my catgirl love 100% but unforunetly i know since its 4krap it'll never get another season or finished in usa. Magical girl pretty sammy rooted from my tenchi fandom in the early 2000s but I've collected all of magical project s and one of the ovas on vhs long ago and guess what STILL watch it. Now i heard pretty cure was liscense but were the heck is it! i also wanna see the rest of wedding peach and i dont know if petite princess yucie would count as magical girl anime but that series made me happy. OF COURSE i cant forget the pretty original lyrical nanoha with its great costumes, mages and action along with cuteness. the only magical girls anime i could watch and agree on with my onichan(big brother) for those who are like what i mentioned in the first paragraph OPEN TO THE MAHOSHOJO! Edit I HEARD OF EVERYTHING ELSE YOURE SAYING BUT WHEN I TALK ABOUTTHEM THYRE ALWAYS LIKE I ONLY KNOW SAILOR MOON! Last edited by Viga_of_stars on Thu Sep 28, 2006 5:58 pm; edited 1 time in total |

ORLY? But what about My-Hime, Mai-Otome, Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha, A Little Snow Fairy Sugar and the probably dozens of other shows that show many similar elements of mahou shoujo like... Kamichu!? The problem with the specific genre is that it's really predictable in so many ways. Though I do enjoy the genre myself, I'm a sap, but I can honestly say I think it's a pretty weak genre that has some pretty weak shows unless they're made exceptionally. |

Despite myself, I enjoyed Pretear.
The first few episodes of Princess Tutu had me wondering what nice drugs the writers were on... but after that it REALLY drew you in with it's story and music. Plus it's one of the few anime I can get my wife to watch with me. |

Nanoha is king of Mahou Shojo and plenty popular, CCS is also stil very popular despite its age as well. You are talking to ignorant people if they only talk of of Sailor Moon.

First thing to look for is titles like Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha which are a dead giveaway. ardcaptor Sakura is still the archetypal mgical girl anime to me, more so than Sailor Moon with its Sentai tappings.

Hey, you changed it to a white feather.....
Anyway yea, CCS and nanoha are pretty much staples in the Mahou Shoujo department nowadays. Of course, several other animes make spoofs of the Mahou Shoujo genre as well, and when doing so often make refernces to CCS (since it's older) or Sailor Moon (more widely known). As time goes on I can see them making parodies of Nanoha as well, it was a good anime, what can I say? But for now we have the weird mahou shoujo/mahou sentai type themes that, though the storylines are somewhat different, all seem the same. Of course seeming the same doesn't mean they'll all bore you, it's just all in how the story is told, which is really what saves most animes (like the edning of Uta~Kata for me). Another interesing one is UltraManiac...nothing like your classical CCS or Nanoha type Mahou Shoujo type, but is very good nonetheless. Ah, I better stop now for this one...can't focus without food -_- |

Can't speak for the others, but My-HiME isn't a magical girl series. It has girls which use magic, but no other stylistic elements typical of the genre and the target audience is both a) males and b) older (more mid-to-late teens than early teens). If you want to see the absolute best magical girl stuff, Princess Tutu is a must. And 4Kids has the license for Pretty Cure, which I've heard is quite good. Last word was that it was supposed to be out this fall, but that was back around the end of February. |

Well... no, it's not entirely a mahou shoujo, but does have a mahou shoujo and it does share a number of features with the stereotype of the genre. Enough that I'd at least call it part of the genre. It is as much a 'male-oriented' mahou shoujo as far as I can imagine; personally, I consider the story elements and tactics more important than the target audience in this case. EDIT: I'm curious... if My-Hime is so obviously not part of the genre, what do you consider to be the genre? Last edited by selenta on Fri Sep 29, 2006 12:14 am; edited 1 time in total |

While it isn't generally considered a magical girl series (and it certainly isn't part of the Magical Girl genre), it could be depending on how you define "Magical Girl" anime. I remember there was an "Ask John" article a while back, and he argued for it being a Magical Girl anime ableit an atypical one. However, I personally don't consider it to be one. |

I can't believe that no one has named the quite cute Cardcaptor Sakura! Not only is she too cute but she has a different Magical Girl outfit every episode!

Really? Heh, never knew that. The costumes always are the best part of those shows... maybe I'll have to find a few episodes of that. |

There is the new "Sasami, Magic Girl Club" version. A completely different twist from "The Magic Girl Pretty Sammy" concept.

Akazukin Cha Cha. Modified form of Red Riding Hood. It's very cute and hilarious.
![]() Kaitou Saint Tail. I note this for actually using magic tricks - as opposed to fantasy magic. |

As usual, I'm going to have to mention Chikyuu Shoujo Arjuna as one of the most overlooked magical girl series, as well as one of the great masterpieces of anime. It's very atypical of the genre by focusing more on Juna's personal life (she only fights monsters in maybe 5 or 6 episodes out of 13) and how lessons she learns about caring for the environment and other people help her power to grow. And her ultimate power? Nothing more than simple empathy. She learns to save the world by loving and sympathizing with every living creature. And besides, the animation and art of Arjuna are staggeringly beautiful for a TV series (or any anime, really), and the soundtrack, provided by the illustrious Yoko Kanno, is my favorite of all time and perfectly balanced with the visuals to create wonderful dramatic moments. (That's where "Cloe" comes from.) Everyone should see this series!
Another often overlooked magical girl show is Studio 4°C's quirky Mahou Shoujo Tai Arisu, otherwise known as Tweeny Witches. It sports unique, stylized (but still appealing) character designs, a fun story, and a truly likeable main character who just oozes charisma and optimism. It doesn't have quite the substance of Arjuna (very little does), but it's a great little show. |

Like others have said: My-HiME/Otome and Lyrical Nanoha FTW. Nanoha gets a fair amount of attention in some places, and I'll be damned if 4chan goes a day without a My-HiME/Otome topic.
Both of those are good action shows, highly recommended to anybody that hasn't already watched them. (though Nanoha takes a few episodes to move beyond the usual magical girl stuff and into the realm of hotblooded-ness) |
