Best Director: Tetsuro Araki. I think that is great news. He deserves it for working on Guilty Crown and Attack on Titan.

Best Music: Hiroyuki Sawano. Guilty Crown's music was pretty spectacular so can understand that. Such good news all in all.

I don't know why people keep criticizing him. For the role of the film his kind of monotone voice actually fit the part very well. I mean at the end of the day he is playing a slightly eccentric aerospace engineer, someone very realistic and I don't expect a character like that to blow me away with his oratory skills. To me his voice met the realistic tone of this last film.

Also even a month or two removed, still dumbfounded Wind lost to Frozen. Probably end down the road in an article of worst category winners.

But we're supposed to buy, by the end, that he's completely heartbroken spoiler[over the death of his (made up for the movie) wife,] and his character is animated as openly weeping, while his vocal intonation sounds like he doesn't care. Additionally, everyone else is talented and plays their roles emotionally like normal, so his dull acting sticks out like a poor thumb.

I heard this criticism from Japanese fans as well, so it's not just an American listening to it. Anno is not a voice actor, and it shows.

I haven't seen Frozen yet (don't have much money to see movies lately), but so long as it doesn't decide to gloss over the war atrocities that its lead was involved in or how he felt guilty about it in real life, and if it doesn't have it's only lead female character be a weakling entire defined by her relationship to a man, then yeah, Frozen deserved to win over this, Miyazaki's most disappointing movie.

I know I tend to hijack a lot of these threads, but I can never get over how Miyazaki decided that instead of making a movie about the moral complexity of real-life Jiro, he decided to focus on a completely made up sappy melodrama. This movie is pretty, but the story suuuuuuuuuuuucks.

At least you're not one of those people that thinks the Academy is corrupt because Madoka: Rebellion wasn't nominated.

Hahaha, voice acting school is overrated. Laughing

(And it's one thing to be "passable" for a character, but it's a whole 'nother thing to be the best over all the other voice actors. This is way beyond whether he was simply good or bad - this is about whether he was the best, better than all the other seiyuu, i.e. how far's the bar lowered.)

I have to agree. I didn't like how they glossed over it either. Frozen probably won because it more people could relate to it. (I only saw it recently, but it may just be my favorite Disney movie already because of that same reasonl).

I'm happy to see The Wind Rises win more awards. I thought it was very beautiful and inspiring and I probably haven't enjoyed one of Ghibli's films so much since I was little.

It's so odd how individuals can have such a disparate reaction to the same thing. Smile
If you wanted a documentary I can understand the disappointment. But, I think nearly all the criticism and controversy I've heard and read is misguided pretty much otherwise. The movie seemed to be a good mix between some real life elements and literature with the requisite artistic license. It has a clear anti-war message from a few minutes in. I almost thought at one point the movie was being a bit too obvious and possibly redundant to hammer home the awareness, consequences, and struggles.

I'm not sure why there's an idea the Oscars were so wrong this year too. I love Frozen to pieces (from the music to messages) and enjoyed some of its lovely animation as well.

Uh the movie takes place in pre War Japan, it did not gloss over anything. Did you miss out on scenes when he standing in essentially a grave yard of planes, or the constant mention of Japan would burn, etc. You clearly missed the point of the movie, its not to downplay war, but to show people can have grand dreams they reach for that just don't turn out how they would want.

Also people like that exist, not everyone carries there emotions on their sleeves, and eccentrics genius like in this film tend to have a harder time expressing emotion. If anything his portrayal was pretty spot on, and surprisingly refreshing. Loss effect people in different ways, and lack of his open emotions do not take away from the quality of the film.

And yes I would argue both females in Frozen are not much to write about. One is an ostracized misfit who decides to forgo her independence and freedom and come back. The other is a rather shallow typical teenager who makes one split decision to save her sister, a decision that pretty much anyone would make as familial ties tend to hold the highest meaning in our society. And its not like she even sacrificed anything, she still gets together with the male lead and the magic curse is undone. I mean I am not left with any emotion for that scene.

I am sorry its not a happy movie, and apparently that is the criteria for best "animated" film.

No, she brought her independence and freedom with her. She could now do whatever she wants, except this time she could do those with her people.

At that time she made that split decision, she was sacrificing her life - whether by sword or by frozen ice. She did not know that her very act would save herself. The only shallow thing about her was that she fell in first love at first sight too easily.

Wind Rises was a happy film to us. We thought Naoko was very sweet.
Kinda like Toy Story 3, which got Best Animated Feature.

I certainly wouldn't have voted for SnK's director. All the other awards it received I'm down with, but I was quite disappointed with the way it was directed. Maybe it's an issue of personal style. Personally I would have gone with Masayoshi Kawajiri for his work on C3-Bu. Now THAT was some A-grade directing.
