I don't know why people keep criticizing him. For the role of the film his kind of monotone voice actually fit the part very well. I mean at the end of the day he is playing a slightly eccentric aerospace engineer, someone very realistic and I don't expect a character like that to blow me away with his oratory skills. To me his voice met the realistic tone of this last film.

Also even a month or two removed, still dumbfounded Wind lost to Frozen. Probably end down the road in an article of worst category winners.

But we're supposed to buy, by the end, that he's completely heartbroken spoiler[over the death of his (made up for the movie) wife,] and his character is animated as openly weeping, while his vocal intonation sounds like he doesn't care. Additionally, everyone else is talented and plays their roles emotionally like normal, so his dull acting sticks out like a poor thumb.

I heard this criticism from Japanese fans as well, so it's not just an American listening to it. Anno is not a voice actor, and it shows.

I haven't seen Frozen yet (don't have much money to see movies lately), but so long as it doesn't decide to gloss over the war atrocities that its lead was involved in or how he felt guilty about it in real life, and if it doesn't have it's only lead female character be a weakling entire defined by her relationship to a man, then yeah, Frozen deserved to win over this, Miyazaki's most disappointing movie.

I know I tend to hijack a lot of these threads, but I can never get over how Miyazaki decided that instead of making a movie about the moral complexity of real-life Jiro, he decided to focus on a completely made up sappy melodrama. This movie is pretty, but the story suuuuuuuuuuuucks.

And yes I would argue both females in Frozen are not much to write about. One is an ostracized misfit who decides to forgo her independence and freedom and come back.

The other is a rather shallow typical teenager who makes one split decision to save her sister, a decision that pretty much anyone would make as familial ties tend to hold the highest meaning in our society. And its not like she even sacrificed anything, she still gets together with the male lead and the magic curse is undone.

I am sorry its not a happy movie, and apparently that is the criteria for best "animated" film.
