Happiness Charge Pretty Cure (TV)

Synopsis wrote:
The ruler of the evil Phantom Empire, Queen Mirage, begins her invasion on Earth using an army of Choiarks and powerful monsters called Saiarks. Pretty Cures are dispatched to fight against the Phantom Empire threat. Hime Shirayuki, a princess from the Blue Sky Kingdom who was given the power to become Cure Princess by a being named Blue, flees to Japan when her kingdom is invaded by the Phantom Empire. They defended the Earth against the Phantom Empire.

Hey, this is the 10th Anniversary Pretty Cure series which makes this the longest running, most kick butt magical girl franchise in Japan so I figured why not start doing yearly threads?

And Episode 1 is brought to you by Cure Black!

Of course the tricky part is that this will be formulaic so don't expect elaborate plotting especially since Episode 1 is pure introduction though it did open with a nifty fight scene against this year's enemy. If you like the characters so far and this year's gimmicks, you should be alright (imagine yourself as a child watching Power Rangers or even Sailor Moon for the first time Surprised).

I will say though that they weren't kidding about this being "happiness charge" considering how happy-go-lucky the main girls are. And not to mention how Hime is SO a love child of Erika (very expressive) and Tsubomi (very pathetic Precure in the beginning) from Heartcatch Precure (I expect TONS of shout-outs and references in this series since it is an anniversary series). The setting intrigues me this time around considering that Precure are considered known superheroines in front of the public so I hope they utilize that fully. The use of cards for transformation sequences means we're going to get a lot outfits for the girls especially those dance-themed ones they hyped up in their website.

I went into this really wanting to like it. I really do. I just...

I'm really struggling with the obvious use of tropes in their design-a-cure cutouts this season. Hime is obviously crafted by using a dartboard and choosing five or so main tropes to create one terribad character. Megumi is just your typical genki girl with a clumsy streak. Cure Fortune should rather be named "Cure Tsundere". It is like they didn't bother trying and just mashed as many character tropes together when planning this out.

The henshin sequence. Seriously. Do we really need to have the characters sanitized while transforming by using an enormous cape so we can't see that girls are girls? And, despite being mostly well animated (more on that in a minute), it is blindingly bright. So much white it is hard to watch. Happiness Charge Prudecure is a better title.

But hey, its all about the sasuga right? Wrong. You need a story to support your over-animations. There isn't one so far. We know that Megumi is a nice clumsy girl. We know that Hime has a name the length of a light novel title. We know that Cure Tsundere is a bitch. But who are the enemies? Where is the danger? Why are they replacing the world with snacks and ice cream sundaes? Why is Hime even in this world? The first episode should at least lay a groundwork for the next almost 50 episodes. There's nothing here but candy tossed at us while the enemies steal a schtick from the Amazon Trio and play bondage games making terribads.

Sure it was sparkly and bright and shiny and maybe there's something to enjoy here but unlike every other Precure series, there is nothing given here to build on other than "Baddies are bad" and "good guys are cute, shy and clumsy". It is all candy, no meat.

And yes, that is a bad thing.

I am caught up with Precure from Fresh season forward, and as far as I am concerned HC sadly has the weakest debut episode in comparison to the seasons that I have caught.

I am hoping the fan translation of the Terribads does not become a prophetic description, that the following few episodes change my mind and my wild eyed theory that Toei put all there regular writers to fill in the gaps on Sailor Moon is just as silly as I think it is.

Except this is practically the lewdest Cure series we got at least since Fresh, and if you cared enough to take a look at their curves even in bath towels, the details during henshin or the buttcheek peek of Lollipop Hip Hop in the ED, you would see why people were claiming it to be almost unprecedently risque for a Precure series.

Oh, aside from that, it was an alright episode, it feels like they are trying out something new with this Precure is a common knowledge thingie.

One is more than likely a Prude if anyone remotely thinks the closer or the transformation sequences are lewd.

Art imitates life with regards to the closing and certainly the dance sequence is much more PG than anything AKB48 or Morning Musume would perform.

Tell that to the numerous fans who think they are (and be happy about it), myself included.
It's not anything like ecchi series, but for Precure, it certainly is one of the lewdest seasons so far.

Cure March has a transformation sequence where wind blows up her skirt like she is Marilyn Monroe, HC is not even close to the lewdest of Precure seasons.

Characters are ultra bubbly. So far i can say that i enjoyed Dokidoki precures opening episode more. I think this show might give me moe diabetes eventually. I'm loving the soundtrack though. Hiroshi Takaki is a good fit for precure. Though i hope it doesn't keep him from doing other projects like it did for Takanashi.

I've got a history with Precure stuff.
-Saw Original and Max Heart. Loved both.
-Saw most of Splash Star and then jumped to the end. Liked it.
-Saw all of 7 episodes of 5, and about 3 episodes of Gogo. bleh.
-Saw over half of Fresh before jumping to the end. Liked it.
-Saw most oh Heartcatch. LOVED it.
-Saw maybe half of Suite before jumping to the end. Liked it.
-Saw 10 or so eps of Smile but lost interest.
-Only saw 1 ep of DokiDoki and just didn't care.

Lately I've been more interested in just reading summaries of them, watching the introduction episodes and the final arc, since the shows themselves don't seem to be fitting into what I liked about the originals anymore. I actually think one of the problems might be with them sticking to 4+ cures, but marketing is the most powerful factor here.

This one likely won't hold me for very long either. I like the angle that Precure are known heroes and the world is in active wide-spread peril (even if that peril seems really stupid) but I absolutely hate the art, animation style and the characters. That zooming in on the mouth thing in particular got old really fast.

As for "lewd" I really don't understand. I don't even think "lewd for a Precure show" should even be a thing. Going from 0% fanservice to 0.0001% shouldn't even count.

I can imagine myself dropping this one before 10 eps in unless it pulls something really cool or adds a winning character. It did get bonus meta points for the fansubber's riff track though. THAT was hilarious. "It's Namekelder! He's being a total dick again!"

EDIT: I forgot to mention, although the ED didn't impress me as the other 3D ones did that sunset bit looked fantastic.

Episode 2 is brought to you by Cure Dream! (wait, it's not Cure White next? Anime dazed)

It helps that one is a fan of Precure because man, that Cure Lovely can fight! Of course Cure Princess best strategy in any situation is the Joesph Joestar strategy of RUNAWAY! Surprised

Though I did like that moment where Lovely gave Princess a chance to get her first win in battle. I'm getting a feeling Hime is going to be the focal point in the overall story which is a nice change considering all the past ones tends to be mostly about the pink Precures.

This episode also introduce a new gimmick known as the PreCards which allows the user to transform into different outfits and gain secondary abilities. This episode introduced Detective Megumi who's on the case on where the hell Hime ran off to!

It also seems that that the evil empire has taken over various parts of the real world. I wonder we'll see the Precure go globe-hopping or meet other Precure in other parts of the world. But that would be WAY ambitious for Toei's part! Laughing

It was nice to hear Cure Dream's voice again. Smile

I loved the Kindabads. Razz It's about time that Precure stole that from sentai shows. Razz

So the next Cure is the candy girl, right?

This may be the old Power Rangers fan within me, but I like the fact there are mooks for the Precure to fight before the monster-of-the-week. It's an opportunity to get more fight scenes. Though next episode is mighty interesting because it showed freakin' Seiji can hold off against the mooks on his own?!! Shocked

(I'm trying to recall if there has been untransformed fights against mooks in Precure or I just imagined it)

Episode 3 is brought to you by Cure Passion in all of its QUALITY! Very Happy

Ok, they're throwing in a few elements that could twink the formula a bit. First off, Megumi's childhood friend Seiji while not only being able to hold his ground a bit against the enemy mooks, he NOW knows the Precure's secret identities, and thus joins group with his brand new pink smartphone just like what the girls have! Surprised

And wow, did Blue actually say Precure are not allowed to fall in a romantic relationship with anyone? He is SO projecting, and the OP sequence pretty much hints on why he made that rule.

I'm hoping they don't have an adult form, or more like, I'm pretty sure they don't, and won't have one.
