Ok so I visited the Space Dandy encyclopedia page just now and was immediately dumbfounded by what I saw there. The show is only 5 episodes in and already people are rating it.
Rating a show that is only 5 episodes in is the equivalent of looking at a picture of a drawing of a concept car that hasn't even been made yet and automatically saying, "That is the best/worst car I have ever driven."
Basically the question is, is it appropriate to rate a show that you have not seen enough to know what it is you are rating?

Well, it is possible to rate those 5 episodes, at least.
But yeah, I only give things rating if I've seen the entire show (with one exception). Shows that have bad starts could have great finishes, and shows with great starts can have terrible finishes. One can never know.

A.N.N. does have a strategy in place for dealing with such nimrods folks.....
EDIT: Edited to reflect criticisms.

I generally rate the shows I watch after they are finished unless they are:
Dropped
On-hold
Long term shounen or series that stretches over 100+ episodes
Imo, it's not a good idea to rate a show before it's finished airing since the pacing and consistency along with other factors can change quite a bit during its duration. Just some fruits for thought.

Yes, yes it is. Why not?
It should be obvious that that person is only rating the episode he has has seen. Really, people make way to big a deal of other people's ratings, are they really so important to you guys? Even to the point where you start to flame/insult them?

When I rate a show that I dropped I always put in the comments how many episodes I've watched, so it is clear as to what exactly I'm basing my rating on. You may not like it that I rate a show after only watching two or three or eight episodes of it, but at least I am being perfectly transparent and not trying to pass my rating off as covering the entire show.
On a related note, only rating after you've watched the entire show grossly inflates the rating, since those most likely to finish a show are its fans. This is a similar rating inflation principle to sequels usually being higher-rated than the first season. Those who watch a sequel are probably already fans of the franchise; if you disliked the first season you're less likely to start the second season.

I don't "rate" things in an official sense. I just give them a vague "like" or "don't like". But that either happens when I drop something, at which point I judge them based only on what I've seen, or when the show is done it's usual airing. I might go back and touch up an opinion based on extra episodes or BD cleanups.
If ANN allows people to adjust their scores later then that should solve the problem.

It's really easy to change your rating if your opinion changes. I've done this in the case of several shows I've seen all the way, that afterwards I decide I didn't get quite right the first time.
Anyway, usually I would agree that you should watch the whole thing before you rate something, but for something that's still airing, then I don't see the problem. Ratings give people an idea what others think of the show, even if only for what's available so far.
This is of course assuming that people will change their rating afterwards, if it changes. Which is a big assumption but, for something that I'm assuming is fairly popular, I wouldn't worry too much about it being unfairly judged (at least not anymore than any other title).

Hold on there; exactly what are you referring to?

With all due respect, no one has been called out on this; I would hardly characterize the postings in this thread as being flaming/insulting. One thing that the ratings do not (regrettably, in my opinion) do is to distinguish between users who have categorized the series as "seen all" and those who have categorized the series as "Seen some" or "Will not finish."

Well, you did indirectly call me a "nimrod"; after all I am one of those people who rate anime based on as little as the first five minutes of episode one. I didn't take offence at your comment (because I know you weren't intending to attack me) but someone else might have.

The encyclopedia already gives average ratings based on Seen All, Seen Some and Will Not Finish.
For example, here are Mirai Nikki's ratings:
Weighted mean: 7.779 (Very good−), rank: #671 (of 5840) (seen all: 7.85 / seen some: 7.50 / won't finish: 4.70)
Now obviously those figures don't affect the more-important bayesian ratings, which doesn't bother me but may bother you.

I'm not trying to attack you, but your use of the word "nimrod" came off as a little strong to me.
I don't grade things in my unfinished/currently watching list, even if I think its great stuff. However, I do rate things that I have completely seen and stuff that I wont finish. Usually there's a reason I wont finish something and yes if it gets a strong enough negative reaction from me within the first 3 episodes I'm going to grade it harshly. I think its telling if a show doesn't do anything for you in the first couple of episodes or totally turns you off and I also think that's useful information for others to know. If its really mediocre and bland in the first 5 episodes then that's probably what it is and that's the rating it will get. I may go back and watch the whole thing if there is such a groundswell of support for it and I may change my mind on the rating, but I think this has happened maybe only once or twice. As far as the stuff that I consider really bad? Well, I see no reason to suffer thru a whole season to see if a show improves from awful to just plain bad. If its really that bad or insulting in the first couple of episodes then it deserves a poor grade.

I rate as I watch. I normally do give it a few episode before I make my first rating but after each episode I judge the show as a whole up to that point and will change my rating if needed.

It's fun to watch the scores on MAL fluctuate every week and then take a massive jump upwards when the show is finished and MAL disregards the scores given by people who have not watched at least 1/5 of the show

But its not a problem, so I fail to see the need to be called on out it.
