With the full knowledge of the fact that Avatar the last airbender is not considered to be a anime...

I am a large fan of the series and I was just interested in seeing what other anime fans think of this american made series that out of all other channels and producers is made by nickelodeon. The series itself is well crafted and designed and most considerably the story with all its intrecate details and side stories. I don't know who animated the series but the work done, I think, is high quality especially the fight scenes involving many benders.

[EDIT: Seeing as how the threads being linked are already locked, I'll leave this open for now. Also adjusted the topic name so as not be confused with picture-avatars. -TK]

NEWS: Nick to Strip Avatar

I won't comment as I haven't forced myself to sit through a complete episode yet.

ETA: Found another link, from the last time you started this topic.

No offense dude, but personally, I hate Avatar. the animation is very poor, the characters just annoyed me, there was humor at parts where there shouldn't have been, and the names. Are those even names? It just seemed to be too much like Naruto with a bit of Fullmetal Alchemist thrown in. Another thing, Zuko reminds me of Seto Kaiba. They're both obsessive over the main character(s), they both act emoish in a way, and they both have pretty dumb reasons to have grudges against the main chracters: Kaiba because he got beat at a card game, and Zuko just because he wants to capture Aang for whatever reason(Why do I know these names?). Sorry, but I still say Fullmetal Alchemist and One Piece are better.

How it may seem to go against the nature of an anime fan, I really do enjoy Avatar very much and i'm always looking foreward to the new episode. Of Course there are a lot of anime shows that are way better, but I've seen a lot worse too. I find it very entertaining and I think I'm going to watch it untill it ends.

Although I'm a mature adult, I still enjoy Avatar. I think it's one of the best non-Japanese anime-style productions currently on TV. It's got a complex, multi-layered storyline that becomes apparent only if you watch multiple episodes over time. There's a lot of background info that was presented in the early episodes, which establishes the context for understanding events in later episodes.

Take Zuko's pursuit of Ang, the Avatar. Early on, Zuko was discredited and disowned by his father, emperor of the Fire Nation, for being cowardly and disloyal. (He wasn't. He just wanted to understand the how and why of his nation's drive for conquest.) Zuko seeks personal and political redemption by bringing in Ang as either living captive or dead trophy. But in his pursuit of the Avatar, he's learning things about his nation and about the others of the world that are causing him to begin to question whether the Avatar should be taken out of circulation.

Similarly, the other main characters all have reasons for doing what they do, which were established in the early episodes. It's good for this series that Nick is stripping it on weeknights so people can catch those early episodes. In that respect, Avatar is very anime-like since missing the early episodes makes it hard to follow the later ones. (^_*)

Well I am not going to argue about the comparison to Fullmetal Alchemist, it hands down is better. One Piece though I would have to disagree with, the characters are poorly constructed and the plot is random at best. I can say that there are some juvial concepts in the story but you can say that about alot of other anime series, example, yu-gi-oh: the entire concept is a egyptian magic and socery is transfered into a card game with holographics with the majority of the action being two or three characters standing in place yelling at each other.

And I apologize for being redundant and starting another thread about Avatar the last airbender without checking my past threads. It was an accident and I will be more careful in the future about starting threads that may already exsist.

Well this was just from personal opinion. Although I will say, at times One Piece has been rather boring then it gets good again(Especially during the fights), but Avatar was also pretty boring to me. FMA however, kept me entertained till the end(Especially the last three episodes). I may give Avatar another try in the future but it's highly unlikely.

I like avatar I think it's better than naruto(only because I can't stand the voices sub or dub and if I'm going to read an episode then I might as well just stick with the manga). It's got a pretty good story and animation.

I consider Avatar and FMA to be equally the greatest things in the world.

I don't see how it's contrary to the nature of an anime fan to like Avatar, since when I cosplayed as Katara at Otakon, the only response to it I got was positive. I had a plushie of Zuko (Zutara = Love), and many people not only recognized it, but loved it. There was an Avatar photo shoot, too, and many people in the Artist Alley had Avatar stuff at their tables. I don't think anime fans are generally against it.

As for the people saying it's the same as Pokemon or shows like that, it's not. As people have said, they bring up things like murder and genocide a lot. There's also the intense character development with characters originally shown as the "bad guys". Towards the beginning of the series the main characters and most of the people they come across see the Fire Nation as entirely evil, but during the series you come to see some Firebenders differently. Also, there have been many moments in the series, such as when they reveal in Friday's episode that spoiler[there's an entire city of people who are being brainwashed and controlled by agovernment that's supposed to be the "good guys" ], when I thought while watching it, "I can't believe this is a kid's show on Nickelodeon".

I really love Avatar, it's probably the best American original animation that wasn't strictly comedic in nature (like Family Guy or Boondocks). I love the plot, I love the characters, I love the snarky dialog (Especially Toph), and I love the kung-fu elemental animations they use. It also has some of the best voice acting on television, way better than most dubbed anime, a feat made even more impressive considering that many of the primaries are real children.

As Herbkir said, Zuko has VERY good, VERY specific reasons to target the Avatar. Bringing in the Avatar is the ONLY way he has to recover his position and return from exile.

Don't go knocking One Piece. The $Kids version might suck, but the actual show is very solid, and the characters are some of the best defined characters in shonen anime (at least as well defined as Ang and his friends are).

Anyways, when they started running fresh episodes again I was just overwhelmed with joy.

aww crap...I just read that spoiler tag further up not realizing another episode had been released while I was at AWA Anime hyper...oh well, I'll enjoy the episode just the same Smile

My friend originally tried to get me to watch avatar, and just on the premise of it being an american cartoon i originally refused. Then one day when I was leaving the house, my lil bro was watching it...the scene where aang and zuko are fighting on the water well...I stopped and said, "hey, what's this?" from then on, I was on a quest to download the episodes...since I can't keep a tv schedule for the life of me.

This is actually similar to how I started watching dbz...refused just based on the name, then was leaving once again and saw my bro watching movie 3, tree of might...watched it every day on tv since then, till i graduated and never got to watch the buu saga -_-

I'm really not so close minded usually, but i tend to steer away from american toons, specifically toons like futurama, simpsons and sponge bob...I like family guy though Smile

The animation itself is outsourced to a Korean animation studio, but the pre-production work done by the Nickelodeon team is detailed and thorough enough that by the time it is sent to Korea, the animators there have a clear idea about the timing and movement.

I spoke with Jenna Luttrell, who oversees the production of Avatar: The Last Airbender, at the Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films, where I was screening my film at the time. She was very, very nice and obviously very proud of the quality of the show and quite passionate about it as well. She said the Nickelodeon team encourages the Korean animators to approach the animation in the best way they see fit, to make them more comfortable with the material and increase the quality of the end result. And the writers and artists at Nickelodeon spend a long time perfecting the scripts and storyboards, to also ensure the best quality they can produce. Simply put, everyone is doing their best. That's why I don't think it is very wise for an anime fan to simply disregard the series as unworthy of their time, simply because it's not Japanese. There are many talented and hard-working people involved with the production of this show, so it's wonderful that it has been embraced by so large an audience.

I missed the most recent ep on tv, so i *coughdownloadeditcough* eh...I understand a good part of that episode took place at night, but I'm thinkin it just may be the quality of the rip, but was it supposed to be really really dark? I had some problems telling what was going on in the fights during that episode -_-
