I love both Top wo Nerae series and especially how they ended up existing in the same universe (contrary to the initial belief by the community that they were completely separate). Episode 6 just came out and it's a jewel.
Of course, Top wo Nerae is in a class of its own but Top wo Nerae 2 is a pretty damn good OVA too (especially the Hideaki Anno story boarded episode 4). mk2000 |

I would see this for Aim for the Top! only. DieBuster left a bitter taste in my mouth as I did not really care for the series.

Yeah, unfortunately when people try to make sequels to things that are considered sacred ground, chances are that no matter how good your product is there will be a large percentage of the original following that will not accept no matter the outcome. It's somewhat similar to the case of the original Star Trek and when Star Trek Next Gen came about. There were A LOT of fans that shun Next Gen for merely existing. And although Next Gen to me proved to surpass the original in almost all aspects, to this day there are fans of the original that will not accept it. So I feel a bit bad for Diebuster since it's a very good OVA but unfortunately it will never be good enough for many. (especially since the original really is in a league of its own). mk2000 |

Really @ The Star Trek thing? Most fans I've talked to love it, and a few admitted feeling that way until they started watching NextGen with an open mind, rather than contstantly going "This sucks it's not the original" WOnder if that's what's going on with the Diebuster haters. Personally I love it, but Ganiax always manages to reel me in most of the time with flashy visuals (FLCL). Which reminds me, I do hope Synch-Point releases the FLCL Box set soon. Also, there are times where the sequel manages to really suck. (Tenchi in Tokyo?) EDIT: i spel gud. |

There's a bunch of reasons, but that's it in a nutshell. It didn't help that Diebusters beginning on top of being very different in both tone and appearance from Gunbuster, is just really, really bad. That probably made a lot of the more devoted Gunbuster fans just quit on the show almost immediately before it improved considerably and started to have more in common with the original around the third episode. |

Which is ironic since Gunbuster also sucks at the beginning. (I almost gave up on it myself back when I watched in on VHS) So in reality DieBuster is VERY similar to the spirit of the original. mk2000 |

Gunbuster was a bit more shoujo in the beginning, it didn't suck. It was just lighter in tone. Even then, the opening narrative was rather gloomy. The problem with Diebuster in this respect was that it was following the rather serious sixth episode of the original. So it goes from light to dramatic to light again. That, and it's more goofy, whereas Gunbuster was merely more "girly" in the beginning.
That, and Diebuster keeps the parody obvious even in the more serious moments, whereas it's more subtile in Gunbuster(I once argued this with someone whom refused to acknowledge any such parody existed). I can see how this would turn people off as they're used to a more serious tone from the original. It's more an example of old Battlestar Galactica to new Battlestar Galactica than the Star Trek comparison. Same concept, totally different approaches. As for me, I've liked Diebuster on it's own, but it can't compare. So I usually don't. Though I'll have to finish it befoe i can really say. I've only seen three episodes. There are some things they could've explained better which would've avoided fan strife. spoiler[ Like how they could have mentioned that Nono's an android before they showed her topless in space. This basically defied the spirit of Gunbuster, being a more realistic show. That, I know, caused some confusion since we thought she was human.] They are similar in that Gunbuster was a parody of 80s anime as Diebuster is to 90s anime. Diebuster's just goofier and more obvious about it due to Tsurimaki's directing style. Oh, to get it to play, download the file and play it with VLC Player. MPC won't open it properly. If you don't have VLC, you could use WMP *shudder*. Watching the trailer, I must say that it doesn't surprise me just how well Gunbuster's animation holds up next to Diebusters. spoiler[I also forgot how cool Buster Machince Nono appeared. Love the flaming hair.] |

hmmm....spoiler[When you say topless, do you mean literally topless like in episode one? Because they don't mention she's a robot until episode 2. Of course, we all know she is non-human back in episode 1. Why? Because even though Diebuster seems to be a little less scientific than Gunbuster, the same basic rules of 'Space' apply: 1. There's no air to breath. 2. There's no pressure. The fact that Nono twitched, ran and kicked in space at the end of Episode 1 without air supply and did not explode immediately let us know that she was non-human at that point. This was one of the main reasons Lark was very surprised (not necessarily cause it seemed that Nono's kick killed the space monster)] mk2000 |

That's what I'm refering to. spoiler[Her being in space without a suit. Basically, the humorous nature of the show made it as such where one didn't know whether she wasn't human, or if the show simply didn't care for the phsyics. I know it wasn't entirely clear to some. Since we know she's an android (more so actually) it becomes no big deal later on. On first viewing though, it's another story.]

Ah, I see what you mean. It ends as such and thus it may have turned off viewers from checking out anymore episodes. For that matter, since it's an OVA, it would be about 3 months before episode 2 would come out to explain (or at least let the viewers reason out) the physics of Episode 1 (and once again, by that time many people would have lost interest in the show) mk2000 |

I can hardly imagine someone that thick, they can't see the original for the parody it is. The entire series is a pretty blatant parody of the shoujo tennis anime Ace wo Nerae! (Aim for the Ace). I myself did not realize just how much so until I watched the 'Ace movie, but my god it's pretty clear. After watching that, I saw so many similarities in Gunbuster it was downright shocking. As for me, I absolutely love Diebuster. Episodes 1 and 4 stand out as my favorites. Nono rocks, much more so than the whiny crybaby Noriko. Can't wait to see the final episode. |

The guy read into the drama rather deeply. It wasn't so much that he was thick, but rather that he loved the science, drama and characters so that he missed the cliches and tributes. Diebuster makes that excruciatingly hard to do. It's not that it's a bad thing, just a noticable difference from the original. If you don't believe me, read the thread yourself. http://www.anime-planet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4214&highlight=gunbuster The person in question is Shinji. I do rebuke him in the thread. He claims it fails at being a true parody. Whatever that means.
"Whiny crybaby Noriko"?! I'm curious, but did ever finish Gunbuster? You're saying that what's basically an overexuberent, hyperactive android is better than a character that develops and grows by leaps and bounds over the course of a mere six episodes? It's true that Noriko does start out as weak and clumsy, but she grows past it and becomes stronger than even those she looked up to. y the forth episode, she's become a completely different character. a far cry from her "crybaby" roots. I can't say I've seen the same development from Nono, though I'll admit to only seeing three translated episodes and a fourth raw. She's basically the same character as Noriko, without the dramatic backhistory and a lot more silliness. When learn more of her secrets, but she hardly develops on the same scale. Though I suppose being a spoiler[Buster Machine] helps her to rock. I like Nono, I really do, as I like Diebuster, but she has nothing over Noriko. |

Of course I've seen the entire original. Many times. Back then it was one of the few things available. I think it's been about 7-8 years since i last watched it though. Of course Noriko grows out of her crybaby stage and surpasses Kazumi. If she didn't, she'd hardly be a parallel for Hiromi from 'Ace. Noriko may experience more growth throughout the original, but Nono is definitely more fun to watch. Just my opinion of course. |
