I go to cons a lot. After seeing people like Vic Mignogna and Bill Rogers and Colleen Clinkenbeard, I want to be a voice actor. I do have acting experience, and have played large roles in plays. Anyway, does anyone know where I can audition for a role? I have emailed and written to viz and FUNi a couple of times, with no response. Can anyone help me?

Here's an idea. Go to acting school or actually go to the studios before sending random e-mails out to companies who you know will never reply (I doubt your messages were even recieved). You can't just become a voice actor overnight. But there's hope. Try http://www.voiceactingalliance.com on for size.

Check the "Hey Answerman" Archives. He's gotten plenty of this exact question. Look back about 8 weeks or more and it shouldn't take long to find a column with that question.

You cannot just contact companies and tell them you want to be a voice actor. And you cannot post a topic in a forum, especially one that has nothing to do with acting or talent agancies, and seriously expect results either.

Don't rebuke the guy, he just wants some help. As was mentioned before, it's not as simple as just sending an e-mail and saying "Lemme be a VA," just won't cut it. You'll have to go to a VA school and get reccomendations (sp?) from people to become a VA in this country. I personally would like to try and become a seiyuu in Japan (would have to fully learn the language first) but I doubt that would be possible for me, but having high goals can boost your productiveness. Basically, if you really want it, research more on it and decide a plan of action. If you're able to impress these American companies [which shouldn't be too hard given they choose horrible VAs for dubs as it is (not all dubs, but a good enough amount)] then you'll most likely get the job, but if not, well, as the saying goes, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again." and my little additive to it "... until they finally give in because you're annoying them so much." I'll be rooting for ya

I think you're setting your goals a little TOO high. 
There is absolutely no way some random anime fan can expect to learn the entire Japanese language overnight just so he can travel to Japan, a completely different enviroment, and become a voice actor. Don't count on that ever happening. Just stick with becoming a dub actor. And if you're planning on going to Japan because you loathe dubs or something, well, that's pretty dumb. If that's the case, don't even bother working in anime, because your "go to Japan and voice cartoons" isn't gonna work.
It's about 50/50. Most dubs produced these days are of very good quality. Sure, they may use the same voices over and over, but at least we're not pulling random people off the street or using the janitor who doesn't care about anime to play the main character anymore. That's what 4Kids and Odex (some company in Singapore) still do. Be glad they're only two small companies. |

With the exception of the 4kids comments, thanks for the help. Of course, I did talk to Bill Rogers (VA for Gravitation), who said that just having experience in acting is good enough, and that some cons will actually have companies such as FUNi and others who look for new artists, actors, and such. And I didn't just say "Lemme be a VA". I wrote business letters to make it look proffessional when I said "Lemme be a VA".

That's still not going to work. What'd you do, add some letterhead you got from Microsoft Word? And someone who can't spell won't be taken seriously. If they see an e-mail that says, "Lemme be a VA," they're just going to delete it. Trying to look professional just for the sake of becoming a voice actor won't cut it. Trust me, you won't become a VA by sending e-mails and letters instead of actually going out and taking voice classes. Make a demo reel and send it out to companies before expecting any companies to bother contacting you. If you continue what you're doing, you'll continue to be ignored and make youself look like a fool.

Sheesh God Gundam, you are very harsh. I don't think the person who said they wished to become a seiyuu ever said anything about learning Japanese overnight. It is surely a lengthly process. Furthermore, to become a seiyuu, they would probably have to spent a minimum of two years in Japan just to get the accent down, and that would come after (or perhaps during, if you do some immersion) the five years of study it would take to master the language.
But hey, don't give up! It certainly is possible. In just a mere four weeks of daily study I managed to teach myself the hiragana, katakana, and around 1300 of the "general use" kanji. However, I am still somewhat of a beginner at the language. Also, to Cyborg, I am going to have to say that voice acting school and a professional demo is looking as though it would be the best option. Either that, or call up the company and apply for an interview (if they accept). E-mail isn't going to cut it, I don't think. It looks more profession to either call or send an actual letter. Many people still undermine technology in these days. But good luck to you as well. |

haha well i durnno I've heard a few dubs out there were i was almost convinced theyd hauled their va's in off the street and paid them in methylated spirits how much worse could a true anime fan possibly do ?

When you say "I WANT TO BE A VOICE ACTOR" that is random and you have a long way to go, believe me.

Try searching for 'voice actor', or something similar, in your library's book search. I did that randomly one day, and came across SEVERAL books at my library about how to become a voice performer (which included radio annoucing, TV ads, and similar things, but there were a lot of good general tips that I think would be helpful).
Also, I'm not sure if she's ever mentioned it in an interview, but I would look up how Caitlin Glass (the VA that's the voice of Winry) went into the business. If I'm thinking right (I sure HOPE I'm not thinking wrong), she's fairly young, and was also a big anime fan before she was ever in voice acting--seeing how she did it might help you figure out how to best get into the industry. ^^ |

No. I just passed my Comp. Lit. Course (Computer Literacy) with High 90's (Nerdy Honor Student, true). I used a business letter format that my dad also uses for his company (Entemann's rocks). Besides, this is a forum: No one spells correctly here. I got a job with one of those business letters, so I decided that it was a good format, and continued to use it.

Whatever. Keep sending random letters, thinking you'll get a job as a VA just because your letter looks professional. Keep ignoring the fact that you have no experience voice acting and don't even want to train. You know, you'd be great friends with GrantM1 (I know him from another forum, I think it was AnimeOnDVD). Maybe you should go visit him in Scotland. |
