Hey Everyone,
This is my first post here, but I have been a long time reader of the animenewsnetwork since I am in the field and go to a lot of conventions. I am a producer for an independant animation studio in texas called D7 Studios, and we are releasing a new series online for everyone to watch for free called D7Peacemaker - Revelation. Everything was created by one artist, Arik Renee Avila, using the following software: Flash, After Effects, Photoshop, and Lightwave. The first chapter is up at www.d7.com right now, and I wanted to get some feedback from everyone so we can make the series even better. Please send me any questions, and I look forward to any comments you may have. Tony |

It doesn't seem like anime to me, at least in terms of character design or anything like that. However, it is animation, nonetheless and it's rare to see people posting their own in-house creations on this site, so I'll leave the thread be for now so people can give their feedback and criticism.
Were there any anime influences that went into creating or making this? |

Well, I would watch it, but even after getting flash it still shows the black screen with Get Flash in the yellow :/

Yes, the series has a lot of anime influence (Anime is the reason we started making the series.) We watch a lot of GITS: Stand Alone Complex, Full Metal Alchemist, and Samurai Champloo for inspiration now. When we first started though it was a lot of Cowboy Bebop, Macross Plus, and Ninja Scoll as far as the story complexity.
Thank you for the input!! |

I didn't watch all of it, but I watched about 3 minutes. It's not bad, but the animation shortcuts can be a bit painful to watch at times. I.e., when someone stands up, it just flashes two or three frames rather than actually animating it.
Also, I think the voice acting can use a bit of work. It comes off rather flat at times. The voices themselves were fine from what I saw though. They seemed to fit the characters, they just needed to work on the acting part. Not too bad, but not something I would consider paying money for (at this point) either. At this point, it seems like a pretty good fan work. |

Daemonblue - You just need to get the latest Flash player. If anyone else has a problem with that site, please let me know to as that is something else we are evaluating is how well the site loads, and plays.

THE SITE
Right now the movie isn't streaming fast enough, so it keeps stopping, and I have to leave it paused for a while before it can play a little longer. It might be the site is just taking more traffic right now than it's used to. I don't *think* it's my connection that's the problem, but of course we don't know until more people try and play it. THE ART The art is good; it's just the motion shortcuts that can hurt the impression of the animation, as Hitokiri Shadow said. Overall the show is in an ambiguous state. Here's what I mean: With so few in-between frames, it feels almost like an online comic advancing from panel to panel, which is fine if that's what you're going for. However, some things move more smoothly, such as the background in the elevator, and the wavering of the camera itself. Shimmying the camera like that is useful in certain scenes, mainly ones involving tension, but sometimes just sticking a solid still image of someone talking up on the screen is more effective. Anime does that all the time. It seems like maybe you're using the camera movement to lend life to the work in lieu of more frames, but the effect is a little disorienting because it can't really make up for a lack of in-between frames and it conflicts with the viewer's ability to view it as an online comic. THE ACTING I like the acting. I don't think it's too flat, and the voices are a good match. My overall impression is positive. Of course, the thing that usually prevents a single person from doing animation is the labor-intensive tweening, so for me to say that you need more frames may not be what you want to hear because it probably requires adding staff and multiplying the costs. But I don't see an alternative except simply billing it as an online comic. |

I watched the whole thing. As a flash movie I would say it is excellent. However as any other type of animation it falls well short. As mentioned the VAs fall a little flat sometime, but all the other sound effects seem fine. Also can you make it so we see a square(or a rectangle) screen. I know all that stuff around the edges is suppossed to be artsy, but (for me) it just gets in the way.
Those are just my criticisms, but on a whole good job. |

Seems I just had to give it a few hours to realize that I installed flash I'll agree that for a flash, is decently made, but as an anime, I wouldn't give it a second glance. I mostly skimmed through it after the whole praying scene because I just couldn't stand the 2/3 frame movements (this coming from someone that makes 6 sec gifs from 67 pics, ending for haruhi anyone? ><) and the VA needs more work [the VA sounding more read and had pretty much now emotion where it should, when my aunt heard about her son dieing (2 months after he was born) just a few days after the last time she saw him, it ripped her heart out and now my little cousin makes comments like "Am I going to die like my little brother?" when he gets sick]. For a start, not bad, but there are several things that can be done to make it better. I also agree that the sides are a bit annoying, but that issue is minor compared to the work headed your way. Hopefully this will be a learning experience for all of your staff.

Thank you all for taking the time to give me some feedback. This is exactly what I was looking for. We are always working to make the series better, and I appreciate your honesty about it. It sounds like we just need to get some more people working on it for more actual animation frames. If you see anything else, please let me know.

Omegatier, your studio did a very good job, considering everything was made by one artist. I do have to agree with HitokiriShadow on the fact that some of the animation needs some work. One thing is the mouth animation. That stood out to me. The voice acting wasn't bad. I didn't think it was perfect though. I also thought that it was kinda' funny seeing the Texas flag in certain places during the episode. I also think you have an original story going. It concerns the Book of Revelations and such, but it's pretty original. I liked it. It reminded me alot of a series called Broken Saints. Maybe someone else in this forum has heard of it.

This feels alot like The Animatrix, Ghost In The Shell, Aeon Flux, and that Korean anime Sky Blue. I wonder how this American anime was made.

I really liked where the story was going. I agree with the art stuff on the sides geting in the way, don't get me wrong I really like them at first, but maybe if they were smaller they wouldn't bother me as much. Voice acting was good enough for me ,I'm really not to picky about voice acting so my opinions probably not the best. Animaton wise It was very good for a flash video, as an anime it wasn't that great, but thats only for the animation. Since it seems that the company is going to continue it I'll keep up with it .
p.s. I really enjoyed the story. |

Uh...
Rather than giving a simple "this feels like..." statement and wondering how they made it, at least try to add something to the discussion. Did you like it? Is there anything that you feel needs work? |

What I feel needs more work is the anime-styled movement and animation of the characters rather than stop, move, stop. Now to answer the "Do you like it?" question. I think it's great. I wished it would be on the Encyclopedia but Dan removed the "not anime/manga but related section" which means you can't sumit anymore non-anime onto the Encyclopedia.
