I don't know if it's just because I've gotten more desensitized to censorship esp since it's happening more and more with regards to mana/anime and things in the real world like radio/tv/etc. (I'm just thankful I have satellite radio and I can hear things as they are orignally said.)
I'm really starting to not care anymore. While I can see the person is upset and I would be also but there really is nothing he can do to convice Dark Horse to change their mind. Just like in the real world, the FCC levels fins because of 2 people sending in 100 letters. So the broadcasters have to bow down to that small percentage and there is nothing we can do.
I remember reading about some comic shop guy getting arrested for selling a comic that had sex/nudity in it's taking him years to fight it.
Honestly I can see where in this case a realitor would get caught blindsided and have the chance of get arrested. Especially with a book like that.
Personally I'm also getting really tired of seeing all these pre-teens running around naked but they put the sticker that says they are over 18. Please who are the fooling? Even reading a book like Tengu Tenji I have to be careful about where I read it because who knows who maybe looking over my shoulder.

Can't they just change the age rating on it, and tell all the bookstores to leave the cellophane on it. I mean I don't know what this manga is I have never opened it, but can it be worse than Battle Royale?
Nevermind, it did answer that question, they are afraid of being sued. Go figure.

Well, whatever happens, I doubt the world is going to end because of it.
But their decision kinda makes sense. You can't market a series towards a certain age group, and then just decide to change it all of the sudden.

Seems sensible to me.
I mean, if the creators of cartoons like Sponge Bob started creating Sponge Bob porno (shudder), do you think Nickelodeon would let it go on unabridged?
Hell no. It was created and intended for a G/PG audience. Either Nick could cancel the show or have the company go back and re-do it all.
Dark Horse did the right thing, in my opinion, to get it edited.
A lot of people might scream about censorship removing content from fans, but the flip side would have been removing fans from the content. Going on un-edited would have earned it an AO rating, and it would have been pulled from a lot of distrobution places, making it harder for fans to get, assuming they were a-okay with the sex stuff.
What would be nice for Dark Horse to do is release an "Original Anthology" or something, where you get the edited mangas (or even just the edited sections) in AO form for those who want them. That way those who crave the purity of translation can get it, but everyone else isn't inconvenienced.
Something similar is being done with Naruto, after all. The DVDs out now are the Toonami edits, but we're supposed to get completely unedited stuff sometime this summer (if we haven't already.) This way those that watch it on Toonami can get the DVDs without their parents worrying, and those that want to see the series in its "true form" will get their chance as well. Everybody's happy.

I would have been satisfied if they had released two versions, even if the unedited version cost slightly more.
[sigh] I loathe scannilations, but it looks I'll have to hunt one down now if I want to see it unedited. I'll be skipping volume 5, and future volumes depending on how intact they remain.

I disagree. As someone else pointed out, release two versions, possibly one as an on line thing for the more core audience of readers who know what's going on, since they're really the only ones who care. Or put plastic wrap on it and an age warning. But don't edit it. I don't want the Reader's Digest version of a series, or the politically correct version, or the white bread America version (and this isn't tv or even something mainstream, so that argument doesn't really work). This is just one more thing to send me to scanlations rather than even attempting to support a legit release.

I personally agree with you.I personally can not really read japanese so i have to depend on the english language verison. While i am unhappy with the verison that was released i hope in the future they will re-release the unedited verison like they did ghost in the shell.

The "core audience readers" (or at least the ones "who care") certainly wouldn't want to read it online, even if legit. It'd have that bitter scannilation aftertaste to it.
It's bad enough that this matter practically encourages it.

Excerpt from the discussion:
if a retailer reflexively orders new volumes of a series without happening to notice a change--a very real possibility when you realize how much solicitation material a retailer has to dig through each month--and a younger reader who'd bought those earlier issues ends up getting his or her hands on the adults-only book, and that kid's parents gets their backs up and decide to take action, a perfectly well-meaning retailer could find himself handcuffed, printed, mug-shotted, and facing a potential prison sentence. That's an issue to be taken seriously, and Dark Horse has to honor the concerns of the good people who sell our books.
It seems that they're doing it mainly to look out for retailers and (to an extent) themselves. I don't know if they will release an uneditted version, altho I expect if fan interest is high enough they will. Look at Oh My Goddess, which they released uneditted versions of the first three volumes after originally chopping them down to 1 book. (or maybe don't... since they're now on .. what, their 4th version of vol. 1?) Believe me, if there's money to be made, they will reach out to that demand, altho don't be surprised if the uneditted versions take a little while to produce to "double dip" the early adopters.

Ok, if they censorship somehow detracted from the story, I suppose I could understand it. BUT IT'S A SEX SCENE, and judging by the fact that every single bit of nudity in Sonada's library is for fanservice, I seriously doubt this is going to ruin even the most hardcore fanboy's reading experience (it didn't when they censored Gunsmith Cats). Yeah yeah, I'm opposed to censorship, but save your battles for something worth fighting for. The manga is aimed at teenagers, so I can understand why DH wants to censor it. It's an action manga, not a literary masterpiece (though I will say it's quite enjoyable for what it's worth); drawing a bra on isn't going to ruin it.

It's "scanlation". Not "scannilation".
Why do you loathe scanlations? They're wonderful.

The ones who care would certainly read it online. Where's the "bitter aftertaste" in scanlations? They're often every bit as good as the legitimate version, in some cases better (see: My team's Battle Royale releases).
Regarding the issue...I like Dark Horse, but it's idiotic to censor manga.

They're often really, really poorly translated and have to go through two or more languages before they're translated into English. I've seen some awful scanlations that went through Chinese, Vietnamese, and not to mention Japanese before they got to English. (At least in my experience.)

Actually, it was published in Afternoon magazine, which is for adults. Given that Dark Horse had already published titles with similar content from the same magazine, they probably should've been prepared for this from the beginning.
Not much they can do now, of course.

I'm sure the creators of your beloved manga are estatic that they aren't getting any profits from your "true vision" of their work. I'm sure most of these "true fans" are really going to import every volume of the manga after they've leached every volume off the internet:roll:You know, if you really do feel that Battle Royale was totally ruined by the Tokyopop adaptation, then I can understand why you would want to translate it yourself, but posting scans online isn't going to do the creators any good, nor is adopting an attitude that your scans are the only way to go.

Afternoon's status is a bit harder to define than simply "teenager" or "adult." Alot of their manga is clearly aimed at mature audiences, but many titles target teenagers. In any case, Exaxxion is aimed at teens: angst-filled teen drama, young and rebellious hero, lots of elaborate action scenes and tons of fanservice. It probobly has its share of adult readers, but it reads more like a teen manga to me.

They're illegal, for one thing.

And they're also often way, way worse. I'd much rather read a physical book, anyway.
...Although I can't say I don't sympathize a little bit. It always amazed me how despite doing most of the initial translation from a Chinese version of the manga, the fan translation group I was involved with managed to make a less flat-out wrong translation of Comic Party volume 1 than Tokyopop. I hope they fired whoever was involved with that disaster.
