i was kind of wonderign how annoying every one finds it when you find an anime you like but there come out every 2 months for a new dvd but than of course you want it but right after the last dvd comes out they some times makes a box set so it so annoying you go out and buy eachdvd for like 20 bucks than after you spend like 140 on a whole serie they bring the box set out with the same amount of dvds but only for like 40 bucks i just find it so annoying i kind of with they would just wait and bring the whole set out at the same time and relese a box set first. because when you fin an anime you like you will watch the first few episodes and than you have to wai 2 months for another few episodes it just so annoying.

Think about the money. They get so much more if people can't wait to have the series and so buy the individual dvds rather than the cheaper box set. There is a waiting time so people can't stand it and spend more money. It happened to me with FMA. At first, I was going to wait for the boxset (or something equivalent), but I finally gave in and started buying the individual volumes. Yes, it's annoying, but it's a smart thing to do.

I try to wait for boxes as much as I can. I even try to wait for the box price to come down. But some series I just can't, and companies know that so I don't think they will change anytime soon. It all depends on how much self control you have.

If I really want to see the series now I'll go with the artbox version and collect the volumes individually. If I've seen the series and know it's great I'm going to wait for a set though. The boxes and collections just look better on the shelf as is a lot more organized than millions of individual cases everywhere.

![]() My point is, it can still look good on a shelf when you buy the individual volumes. (Of course, I don't have the whole thing full yet) |

When I first started collecting, I didn't realize that box sets pretty much always eventually come out if you're willing to wait long enough. Now I know better and would always wait for a box set - and maybe even wait for thinpacks. It's not so much an issue of money for me as storage space. I simply don't have enough room to store much more.

It really doesn't bother me since I usually buy the first volume of anything remotely interesting and decide if I'm to buy the rest of the series, wait for the box set (and give extra vol.1 away) or not to continue collecting a series. I tend to do all three of the above depending on how much I like a series. The company releasing it is also a factor. I tend to collect all the Geneon titles individually since there 26 episode series tend to be released in a $200 dollar box set, with a signature set (awful red DVDs) in the far future. I also lean towards the individual ADV discs since the thinpaks lack extras. Bandai on the other hand tends to have somewhat cheap boxsets released soon after the series has completed, with even cheaper editions down the road. I've bought a bunch of Bandai box sets for series that I've not seen or thought were okay at best.
I'm also fond of the limited and special editions series like Samurai 7, hack, and Ghost in the Shell SAC. The Samurai 7 boxes, and SAC 2nd gig tins are amongst the few DVD containers that I've kept since they are so neat looking. It looks like Funimation's new titles will be released in two versions. |

I never really had a problem with this.
I got Evangelion platinum as they came out, art box first, then the other 6 dvds and I'm ok with it, because the only box set that came out was a thinpack boxset and quite frankly the real box and DVDs look a ton cooler. I don't know if they'll do that with elfen lied, but I already have half the discs anyway, but I really liked elfen lied so I have no problem taking the risk. |

I definately can sympathise with the original poster. Personally I have made a resolution to just buy boxsets, and thinpaks. Yes you have to wait a while for them to arrive, but buying any anime in single installments is excruciateing. Your just going to spend alot of time just waiting for the next DVD.
Why do companies do it to make money ofcoarse, but times they are a changeing. Especially in anime land. The consumer gets more savy by the day on how to make that dollar stretch. To those people really do go the spoils. Afterall they can buy five or six series while mister I have money to burn blows a mountain of money buying it one disc at a time. Factor in things like competition, existing libraries, online renting. Then toss in the far more reasonable price tag. Well I doubt it will be too long before many series no longer even have the single DVDs anymore. I know some people will say your dreaming. Am I anyone remember when you couldnt buy american TV series in season installments. There was a time when you would buy them at like three or four episodes a disc, and then had to wait for the next disc. Do they even do that anymore? Like I said if its not in a boxset or thinpak I am just not going to buy it. I think more anime viewers feal that way by the day. We are not in the dark ages anymore. You know no selection, and way to see it otherwise. Top that off with the fact that there are plenty of boxset series to buy. In answer to your question yes I find it highly annoying. I have far better things to spend my money on, and I was tired of being on a leash years ago. I also hated haveing to plan ahead, and do preorders to get what I wanted. |

My two bits worth... I don't find it that annoying simply because I tend to be a creature of habit who purchases DVDs individually. Furthermore, if I start purchasing a series one DVD at a time then I'm likely to continue doing so blindly. Examples of that were Nadesico, Gasaraki and both GitS SAC series (obviously still ongoing). I've even grabbed a whole series, Habane Renmei, in one swoop once. Yes, I purchased all four individual DVDs at once. All in all I tend to buy box sets if I should stumble across them by chance.
A sidebar to the above: I did go and obtain the DVD which came with the collector's box for the series Pani Poni Dash!. Being a whacky series the collector's box was issued as a limited edition extra with volume 3 as opposed to the usual practice of the more typical volume 1 for a lot of other series I've come across. ![]() |

I'm kinda pissed that some companies don't even bother to make decent collector boxes. Or don't make them at all. I mean, yeah, I get the DVD's, only because some companies (ADV, i'm looking at you) screw the box set with the extras later on.
Take Stand Alone Complex for example. The series has several collector packages, but not even a decent box to collect them all into one package. The first SAC series is tucked into a Samurai Champloo Box I canabilized. I'm still trying to figure out how to keep the second one under wraps. Another thing that pisses me off is that the companies only make so much, and then stops production in a relative short ammount of time. I didn't even know there was a box for Ikki Tousen. And I managed to grab the last box of Gunslinger Girl at the local Japanese Cultural Supply store. |

Listen to you all, bitching about how annoying it is that you can get boxed sets.
Over here there are a damnsight fewer titles available and even fewer have boxed sets even after years of availability. Often the boxed sets are worse value than individual DVD's to boot! The hellsing one for example:- 4 individual DVD's(£19.99 each) = £79.96 Boxed Set also 4 DVD's = £79.99 true its only 3 pence more but it defeats the whole point of boxed sets. |

Are you kidding me? I find the tin that came with the 7th volume one of the most gorgeous containers I own. It's very classy in design and matches the 2nd Gig discs in it's metallic theme. The box was much cooler than the toys, mousepad, ID cards, and playing cards. I wish that they would have a mid-ranged version which was DTS but no trinkets, so you could choose which shirts, CDs etc. you want since the bonus items vary in quality. As I've mentioned before I'm that crazy guy who throws out most of his DVD cases (so boxes don't really matter) but I have kept the SAC tins. I wish the spines of the 2nd Gig DVDs were labled (like the Appleseed tin) since there are an increasing number of lableless tins commming out. |

o.O It must look pretty good because my Eva Platinum Thinpak (which I got for $40 btw) is my best looking box. Metallic silver + Rei & Asuka = win (which I think is the same as your box, but yours has two more images since it's much wider?). It really just depends on how much you're willing to spend, and I'm not going to pay $100+ more for something that isn't even series content-related. Which leads me to another point: I love box sets/thinpaks. In fact, I buy only them. I know getting the first art box + getting individual DVDs is going to cost $120-300 for a 26-episode series, and I might not even like the series and might not want to even finish collecting it. Also, I don't have really any interest in extras, whether it be interviews, clean OP/ED, commercials/promos, or ads for other series. If you just care about the series and just want high quality episodes in a thin, clean box, getting thinpaks is a good idea. However, if you want to get the series as soon as it hits the states (although waiting every 2 months for 3-4 episodes seriously sucks to me) and want bigger DVD boxes with more extras, get the individual DVDs. The price difference is usually upward of $100, although there are many exceptions. |
