Being a fan of Ryou's music, I immediately noticed that he took a small section from the song "Shihouka" from his "Twelve Kingoms score" and used it in "Saiunkoku Monogatari".
I've recorded a little bit of each for comparison sakes, have a listen(?): Firstly, the C section (rondo form) of image song Shihouka, from his "Juuni Kokki" composition: Shihouka extract Then, the same but a little different somewhere in the middle of the section in "Saiunkoku Monogatari": Saiunkoku Monogatari extract So far, I've only noticed this huge similarity, since I've only begun to watch "Saiunkoku Monogatari". But I suspect that there will be more similarities like this between "Juuni Kokki" and "Saiunkoku Monogatari". I know it's okay for this to happen since it's from the same composer, but is Ryou Kunihiko running out of ideas? Hehehe. |

Wow, you're right. I haven't watched Saiunkoku Monogatari , but I have watched Juuni Kokuki, and I'm a fan of the OST (especially the image OSTs, good stuff). Guess he is out of ideas , or maybe he just loves that segment so much he wanted to use it again.
I've heard repeated motives in other composers' music as well, though, so I guess it could be forgiven. Kajiura Yuki seems to always like to pair a strong synthetic bass with a not-synthetic melody on top, and pack one of those overturish songs with a powerful choir. In the Ruroken Tsukiohen OST, Taku Iwasaki uses some of the same motives over and over again (it WAS the same soundtrack, but still...). |
