I agree, there are so many different ways, at least stateside to interprete that. Since the lexicon has no definition we can't assume what ANN considers an Otaku.
I voted NO, because I assume you mean the heavily fantatical version.

No as well, I feel it's unncessary to proclaim myself of such "high rank" in the fandom. I just consider myself a fan of anime/manga.

No, not at all, I see no reason aside from ego stroking to try to place myself on some higher tier of fandom. Not to mention I'm an english speaking anime fan, therefore I'm an anime fan, I'm not going to adopt a term from another language to label myself, especially when most people will then require an explanation of the word should I ever use it to describe my fandom.

Perhaps this sequence of polls is being used to determine which 'definition' of otaku people use? After all, the American definition leans more towards just a fan of anime/manga, compared to the Japanese definition. So by comparing the results of "Are you a fan of anime?" to the results "Do you consider yourself an otaku?" they might possibly be able to see which definition people use.
But more than likely, I'm just blowing smoke (oh the joy of pain pills.)
In any regard, I do not consider myself an otaku, as I prefer to utilize the more extreme Japanese definition of the word. I'm an overzealous fan, yes, but by no means do I go to any extremes that could be considered deviant behaviour.

This poll is flawed.
My awnser is yes if using the American Definition.
Yet no if using the Japanese definition.

I consider myself a casual anime fan - nothing more, nothing less.

Agreed. There are two very different meanings of the word "otaku" in fandom.

I voted yes for the same reason it seems many voted no: I *am* at a higher level of fandom than most others I know, so I see nothing wrong with saying it. But the definition is hazy: I still manage to lead something of a normal life (others may disagree) and don't suffer any major setbacks for my fandom, so am I not an otaku? I play it safe and say yes.

I voted yes, going by the American definition. Yet no way am I an otaku by Japanese definition. I have friends, go out places, lead a quite yet reasonable social life (I tend to go out at least every other weekend or once a month), and have other intrests besides anime.
I also shower, eat when I should, change my clothes/undergarments, don't fall in love with fictional characters(though I do find some attractive, I do realize they are fictional), leave my house, spend money on things other than anime (like food, soap, etc.), and have a life.
However, after I pay for the basics, I do spend quite a bit on anime and manga and own quite a bit of anime/manga merchendise, such as t-shirts and figurines. I draw fanart and write fanfiction. I read magazines such as Newtype and Anime Insider, and get excited when an anime/manga I like gets liscensed by a company other than 4kids. I like yaoi, and I'm not afraid to admit it. I cosplay. I go to cons. And one day I hope to become a manga-styled comic artist, and I'm working on my own MIC to send to RSOM. I am a Risembool Ranger.
Originally the poll said 'Are you an anime fan?' I thought it was interesting that some people voted no. If they aren't, why are they on this site?

>< The poll asked "Do you consider yourself an otaku?"
That would mean, by YOUR OWN DEFINITION of the term, do you consider yourself an otaku.
In a way, it's almost also a poll of asking what your definition of the word is. Thus, it doesn't matter whose definition you're using because that's the whole GIST of the poll. If you define otaku by the post-Miyazaki Tsutomu Japanese term, then most likely you'll say no. If you define otaku by the American anime fandom term, then you may or may not say yes.

@hanachan01: Your image of a Japanese otaku is so stereotypical, much like to any random japanese person remembering the Miyazaki Tsutomu murder cases.
I... just had to say it.

Realize, however, that some people DO in fact personally define the term two different ways, depending on the context.

I voted no. I go by the Japanese definition of an otaku which means somebody who's obssesed with any one interest that it prevents them from doing anything else. I do have more than one interest. I like American movies and American cartoons as much as I do anime, although admittedly I don't watch American live-action TV shows as much anymore mainly because I think most of what's on TV sucks these days and I can never keep up with weekly shows on a regular basis, sometimes I read "regular books" though not as much as I should (I just get too distracted sometimes to ever finish a book I start on), play video games, and I like American music just as much as I do J-pop. In fact, I probably listen to more American music than I do Japanese music, but I do have several favorite Japanese artists. While most of my friends are also anime fans, I do have some friends that aren't and I even have some friends who don't even know what anime is and I never talk about anime with them unless they like it, too.
I have seen a lot of series over the years, but the anime DVDs I actually own is a pretty small collection (my manga collection is a different story, though). I don't have any anime merchandise or t-shirts either (even though I do want to buy an anime shirt), I don't care about going to cons (though I would like to cosplay at least once). I have written fanfics and made a few AMVs before, but that's about the most geekiest anime thing I've done and nearly all the forums I post at are anime forums. I consider myself to be just be a casual anime fan who's a little obssesed with his hobby, but not overly-so and I don't go around forcing my interests onto others or acting like everything Japanese is perfect and everything American sucks.
