I've just been wondering about his but will Hunter X Hunter and it's OVA sequels ever be licensed? I myself hav enjoyed the series and know and heard of people that love the series as well. If a series like this is pretty popular why hasn't it been licensed by a company yet?

I think it lost its popularity once Naruto came out, so it was overlooked. I don't have an answer on if it will ever be licensed or not, though. I think it is possible, but there are quite a few shounen titles licensed already.

You know, that is a damn good question as to why it was never liscensed in the first place. But considering how long it's been since the first eps were aired, I would guess that it never will be.
To be honest, the more I think about it, the more it surprises me. That anime would be PERFECT to be the posterchild of anime; it's an amazingly addicting shounen series that has much more realistic characters than most shows out there.
It is one of the very few shows that I am would be excited about if it got liscensed by anyone (barring 4kids of course ) just to give it more exposure here in the States.
(actually, I prob wouldn't be happy with funimation either since I'm angry at them for their more recent projects and what they did to them )

How long has Hunter X Hunter been on the air in Japan? I remember similar threads like these asking is Naruto and Bleach will ever be licenced, and soon they will be airing the same day on the same network.
Give it some time, maybe after all the Naruto craze dies down and we'll just have to see how Bleach will do as well. FMA totally over-shadowed Chrono Crusade and yet those two were licenced and according to "The Click", Showtime [I think] is currently airing it. I don't get Showtime so I'm not 100% sure.

They could definitely run it on Toonami practically unedited, and it would do very well I think. It's even the perfect length for an American cartoon, the entire run of the show was somewhere between 52 and 70-some episodes, and they could easilly commit to a smaller number of episodes than that if they wanted to.

Hunter X Hunter to my knowledge finished its airing during the the time Naruto came out if i'm not mistaken. It did finish up already and had 3 ova series released (none of which were licensed as well).

I think Hunter x Hunter probably hasn't been licensed yet because it's a bit more "realistic" than most other Shounen Jump anime. What I mean is that typical Shounen Jump anime series usually have tons of flashy battles and explosive fights that cause things to go "boom!" and Hunter x Hunter just doesn't really have that. Most of the battles rely more on stragety than sexy bishounens throwing random energy beams at each other. This is one of the things about Hunter x Hunter that I enjoy the most, but unfortunately, most mainstream anime fans are into the more fantasy style battles than realistic showdowns. I've only seen the first 15 episodes of Hunter x Hunter, but I've loved what I've seen so far and I would love to see it licensed one day. The show might've stood a chance of being aired on TV if it was picked up back when Naruto was just getting started, but now with Naruto gaining much more popularity than ever before and with Adult Swim's recent acquiring of Bleach, Hunter x Hunter might end up being over-whelmed by two already mega-popular fantasy-oriented Shounen Jump anime, so I think it'd be better for it to just go with a direct to DVD release. If Hunter x Hunter ever airs on TV, I imagine it'll probably wind up like Yu Yu Hakusho, a show that develops a rather large cult following and gains some temporary popularity, but will be end up being forgotten by most fans over the years when another more popular series comes along to replace it, which would be disappointing if that ends up being the case because it really is a very good series that's highly under-rated.

It actually does get "flashier" as the series progresses, Naruto's "Jutsu" styles were heavilly influenced by HXH's Nen system. The fights are still more strategic though, more like a Sasuke or Shikamaru fight than a Naruto or Lee fight.

You forget he's only seen 15 eps, he doesn't know about the nen system yet
That's one of the reasons I love the anime so much, it's so good you get to love it BEFORE they introduce all that stuff. First you learn to love the characters, THEN you find out about their powers; I can't think of a single other anime that does that to the same quality that HxH does (2-3 eps before something "happens" is nothing). Most shows out there draw you into them with the powers and the special effects then LATER get you to like the characters as you watch their powers expand; and after HxH, I've come to conclude that the powers first strategy is flashier but weak.

I'm not familiar with HunterXHunter, but as recent AnswerMan columns have pointed out, the licensing climate has gone frosty in the past few years, with the Japanese companies asking for more, and DVD sales levelling off over here due to a glut of titles on the market. (Or maybe it's those DVD rippers and "evil" fansubbers, who knows.) The end result is that good-quality titles are getting passed over...even if the people at the R1 companies like a given series, financial realities may prevent them from licensing it Also, R1 companies seem to be focusing on re-releases of older titles (ADV's thinpacks, Bandai's Anime Legends, etc.), since it's cheaper for them and there's at least some kind of proven market for those titles.
