This is a really moving story, and I'd encourage anyone who loves science fiction or fantasy to look up Ken Liu's work. He's an amazing writer who brings an Asian perspective to Western sf.
His short story "The Paper Menagerie" is a deceptively simple but heartbreaking story about a mother and son that swept all the sf writing awards (Nebula, Hugo, and World Fantasy) the year it was released. The author has posted it online as a free (and legal) PDF here: http://a1018.g.akamai.net/f/1018/19022/1d/randomhouse1.download.akamai.com/19022/pdf/Paper_Menagerie.pdf His novella "The Man Who Ended History: A Documentary" also won a slew of prestigious sf awards. It's a brilliant work about the atrocities of war. He also has that work posted online here (this is his blog post where he links to a downloadable PDF): http://kenliu.name/blog/2012/01/06/the-man-who-ended-history/ And yes, I sound like a fangirl here because I am, but I honestly haven't read a bad story from the guy. |
