I've been hearing rumors that there will be a theatrical release of the Fullmetal Alchemist Movie "The Conqueror of Shambala". Does anyone here have reliable confirmation of this?

I don't think there will be. If you look at the "In the News" section, it says nothing about a theatrical release. However, I'm hoping that I'm wrong and that someone can contribute a positive answer to your question.

it was mentioned by funimation that the were to begin theatrical releases of their anime movies and such. The only announced release was a DBZ movie. Howevr i do recall rumors of a theatrical of the FMA movie; it isnt really all that unlikley i dont think. FMA is easily one of funimations bigger series right now, and from what i understand it is doing quite well stateside...so why not bring on a theatrical release?

Thanks everyone. Smile

I looked at the link to the Toonzone boards; while there is talk of a theatrical release, there isn't a definite date. That just makes it still seem like a rumor, which is why I'm still keeping an eye for the news here.

Guess I'll keep waiting...

Lance Heiskell has stated on at least one forum that there are plans for a theatrical release.

If the FMA movie was going to be released in U.S. theaters, why would it be released in October? Isn't summer usually the time most of the big animated feature films are released in U.S. theaters? Seriously, when was the last time you ever saw an animated movie released in U.S. theaters during October? Just because somebody goes around on a message board using the name of a Funi staff worker makes a claim that the FMA movie will be released in theaters or even if somebody who you know for sure works with Funi says it will doesn't mean it's a set in stone decision. Even if it does get a theater release, it'll most likely wind up with a limited release like just about every other non-Pokemon anime movie released in U.S. theaters gets, so even if it does get a release, your chances of actually seeing the FMA movie in theaters will still be pretty slim. But if you want the definite truth, just wait until ANN clearly says on its front page whether or not the FMA movie is getting a theater release. Until then take everything you hear with a grain of salt.

Don't know where you've been, but "big animated feature films" get released throughout the year in the U.S., not just during the summer. We've already seen Ice Age 2 and Hoodwinked out so far this year, for instance, and November/December releases are an almost annual occurrence. I'm pretty sure you'd see at least a couple having been released in September/October if you checked into it.

I'd expect nothing different, since FMA is still a niche title overall despite its great popularity within fandom. I'd be majorly surprised if it made a wider release than the arthouse circuit, which has been the traditional pattern for major anime movies in the past (Princess Mononoke, Steamboy, Spirited Away, and others).

I do not see anywhere on ANN where it says that the FMA movie will be released in theaters. The only info I can find on ANN's site regarding the FMA movie's release is this article here: http://animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=8455 which says, "Funimation announced at MegaCon this weekend that they have acquired the license to the feature-length animated film Fullmetal Alchemist: The Conqueror of Shambala. No further details are available at this time."

It does not say anywhere in this article that Funi is releasing the FMA movie in theaters. It only says that they've licensed the movie and that there are no further details available at this time. Furthermore, the Funi staff member only says, "Can someone say...theatrical release as well?" They did not say anywhere in their post in that thread that the movie was definetly being released in U.S. theaters. They only mearly suggested that there could be a possiblity but nowhere in the post did they actually say for certain that it will be granted a theater release. As I said before, until there is an official press release from Funi up on the front page of ANN that states for certain the FMA movie will be released in theaters, you shouldn't trust everything that you hear.

Not to spread rumors, but Caitlin Glass (Winry Rockbell) herself verified that FMA will be getting a theatrical release at Nakacon in March. She did this at an FMA panel, not an industry panel.

I personally strongly disliked the movie. Okay, I hated it. It turned me into an FMA manga purist, which saddens me. But I will go see it anyway to support Funimation! They're my favorite American release company and have some of the most outstanding dubs out there.

Simple; even though there's talk on message boards and at Cons, until FUNi releases an official News Release it's all rumor.

Actually, what's going on now feels a lot like a whisper campaign; an old marketing trick used to drum up interest for a product or event. Yes, it's manipulative but it works -- and if this is a whisper campaign, it's working very well. Wink

I agree with the others, untill theres something official then it's just a rumor. Just because and employee says it doesn't make it true. You hear about this kind of thing all the time in the tech area. Some manager or employee will say "yes this device will be able to do so and so, or will be released on this date" only to find out that he was missinformed and it wasn't true at all. The PS3 and new nintendo (wii) are prime examples of that....
