Most stores I find retail still sell dvds for 25$ for 4 epsiodes each.
When dvd's first came out I remember 3 episodes with fewer extras for that price.

Series sets for say a full 26 episode series use to cost well over 100$ (remember trying to save my money for outlaw star when it was 190$).
Half way in the decade I saw varying prices between 50-90 dollars.
In the retail sense this is still true, but now online the typical cost is around 40-50$, inless you go for funimation which has that S.A.V.E. Collection for 30$. But I purchased mine for 14$ per 26 ep series and 9$ per 13 ep series around christmas!

Do you think anime is still to expense or just right? I actually thinks its pretty cheap now, inless you buy single dvds at say best buy of course.

I think of it this way: If we're not paying the absurd prices the Japanese are for their anime, then there's no reason to complain.

I think prices right now, are generally affordable for what we get, those nice half season sets or full series sets. It's way less than the singles option and far less than the Japanese pay for stuff. The policy needs some adjustment though, I'm not a big fan of some companies' tendency to release DVDs sub-only.

Yeah wasn't chocotto sister licensed by one of those companies?

I admit over 95% of the time (in my opinion) Japanese is better, but sometimes I like relaxing with a dub after watching too much subbed anime.

When I was a younger man, I used to pay $20 a tape for ADV's VHS release of Evangelion. The fact that I can get all of Eden of the East on blu-ray for $30 bucks on Amazon blows my mind.

To paraphrase Solid Snake, Anime...has changed.

I buy a lot of series by the DVD, so to get the whole thing I usually end up paying quite a bit ($15-$30 per DVDx5 or 6 DVDs); but most of the boxes I've bought have been pretty cheap, averaging at about $50. To be fair, I don't watch many shows that last longer than one or two seasons (so far I think Maho Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha is the longest show I've watched start to finish). It's certainly cheaper than the VHS days. Weather this was because of the VHS's or because anime was even more of a nich medium back then, I'm not sure; but probably both.

I think current prices are, by and large, reasonable. And if you are willing to wait instead of buying something when it first comes out, then prices become extremely reasonable, indeed.

Overall the cost of entertainment on the consumer side has gone down considerably.
Birdy the mighty decode started at 50$ for each 13 ep season. Now you can often get it for 25$ a month later.

You can buy pc games that are a few months old for 20$ that were 50-60$ on release. (with the exception of a few games, such as the blizzard games)
I wish I could say the same for console stuff. (just using example of another entertainment industry)

I bought my Noir Collection when I was a Freshman in High school for 55$ at best buy, a couple years later the same collection jumped to 90$. Now im a Junior in college and you can get the same or rebranded collection for 30$.

Although I think the 90$ price tag was around the collapse of ADV and which pushed the prices of their DVD's higher because there were fewer in circulation because they weren't being produced for awhile.

To expensive for the quality of packaging. o`Ao I'm used to being pampered by my DVD releases. Metal Buttons with Azu Manga Daioh, art boxes, Ribbon/metal pencil boards, and what have you... mainly it is just the art box i want.

Funi's LE I think the price is just fine with that nice art box they've been making... now if only they would release shows that i like I'd buy it in a heart beat \('3')/ too bad that's never gonna happen... but at the same time i've been pandering maybe i should bye the LE's for shows i don't like anyway to show my support of making LE?

Completely agree with Blood- here.

I generally calculate how many episodes against how much I'm paying to determine if something is expensive or not. Either way though besides some strategically priced items mostly everything is affordable, and if you wait it's very affordable.

I'd say that prices, in general at least, are right where they ought to be. Free streaming now usually allows people to preview shows eliminating the need for super cheap 'first view' pricing. You can pretty much always get a new series for under $50 per season right off the bat which is fair and if you don't want to pay that much you can wait a reasonable amount of time and get a re-release at a substantial discount.

I'm not knowledgeable with the current prices, but if it's $50 for say, a 26-episode series, then it's definitely worth the price IMO.

However, if it was $50 for say, a 12/13-episode series, then I find it a bit expensive. I'm a poor jobless teenager, so I really don't have much to say about this subject. My first comment is probably the best explanation of my thoughts on the pricing for that amount of episodes. Heck, even $70-$75 may be a worthy price for that amount of episodes.

411 and its always been this way as long as I can remember:

When volumes first get released, prices are jacked up and way overpriced. For example, what is commonly done in retailers. 4 or 5 episodes for $36 including tax. Years later it goes down to and remains $20 for 4-5 episodes.

Nowadays, the smart thing to do is just wait and buy the box sets since the price ranges are $56-$120. Depends when you buy them. Is that a lot in U.S. currency? [expletive] yes. Competition. Anime thinks its worth as much as lets say a blue ray movie disk. Lets get 1 thing straight, it's not. Like all things, in the American economy, the customers places the value on goods. Anime hasn't learn/ refuses to accept that fact. Bottom line is, its like this. COD4:MW2 vs 12 episodes of anime. iphone vs a box set. Sirolin steak vs 8 episodes of anime. Get my point? Even though we love anime, the avg. consumer does not see the benefits of buying anime. Anime is not as good as the above mentioned alternatives. Thus, anime shouldn't be priced as such. Furthermore, comparatively, the quality of most anime sucks. We enjoy other things more than anime and rightfully so, we pay the higher price. For example, COD, apple products, food, music....The majority of us will and continue to think it is robbery until our values change.

Good points everyone.

The whole wait for the box set thing has killed a few animes in the dubbing process. I think that is the reason full moon wo sagashite was finished after episode 28 in the dubbing. People were waiting for the big box set to be released with all 52 episodes, and not many people were not buying the single dvds.

I see most companies make their money from singles. Box sets are nice to help sell an older anime (finished anime).
I still perfer buying boxsets my self of course, and do not think I will ever buy singles ever again hardly.

I enjoy how my air collection is 3 dvds in 1 normal sized dvd case, but not jammed to the brim. Same goes with my welcome to the nhk, and kanon which have 4 dvds in them.
Although I'm not sure if it's a save collection thing or if it is how it was shipped; my welcome to the NHK and Air dvd cases have excess plastic ruffle to them, but the paper with the artwork, the case, and dvds were perfectly intact.

The strange thing is, I remember getting the Ranma 1/2 boxsets for a good $120 (since having been released for $40 or something) and paying $90 for my Outlaw Star perfect collection (one of the first anime I ever bought!).

However, my habits have shifted greatly from mostly anime to mostly manga since I first became a fan. Using coupons, I might generally get one manga at a time for $7-$10. It's easy to get that little bit of money out of my wallet, but getting me to spend $40+ at a time is a lot harder. Sure, the value might be better and on a number by number basis, logic tells me it is (especially if we're talking about a longer series), but because I spend so much less in one sitting on manga than on anime, it feels like anime is more expensive by comparison. I can't necessarily call most manga series cheaper overall, if there's a 10 volumes series at $7 each (after coupons), that's a good $70, but since I spent that $70 over the course of, say the volumes were released every 3 months like most are now, $70 over the course of two or more years doesn't feel like anything at all. But all at once to say get both parts of Birdy the Mighty? That suddenly seems like a lot.

So I know it's cheaper than it used to be, but it somehow doesn't entirely feel like it to me. And this is coming from someone who got all three parts of Gurren Lagann in limited edition, but that was a rare occurrence as is (one of the only things I've ever bought LE).

Oh and I don't like to blind buy stuff. With the SAVE stuff now and the TRSI bargain bin, you might go "oh, it's only $15-$20" but I'd somehow feel safer blind buying a manga in Borders because at least I can flip through that right then and there, can't necessarily preview all anime through legal means.
