Via WTK from AoD and RACS:

Quote:
Funi just sent over another memo about an hour ago letting us know that they have changed the release format of both Ga-Rei Zero and the Eden of the East Movie.

Instead of the previously announced separate DVD and BD releases, Funi will be combining both versions into DVD/BD combo sets.

So...

Ga-Rei Zero Complete Collection DVD (Eps #1-12)
Ga-Rei Zero Complete Colelction DVD (Eps #1-12) (BLURAY)

now becomes the:

FN-08880 Ga-Rei Zero Complete Collection DVD / BLURAY Combo Set (Eps #1-12)

Eden of the East Movie 1: King of Eden DVD
Eden of the East Movie 1: King of Eden DVD (BLURAY)

now becomes the:

FN-08843 Eden of the East Movie 1: King of Eden DVD / BLURAY Combo Set
The price for the new combo sets is the same as for the previous versions, and all existing pre-orders for these will be updated to the new combo set version. No action is required on your part.

Sometimes on Friday I can't wait for it to be five o'clock in Texas so they stop making changes and I can go home for the weekend. Smile

At first I was all "Oh no, this sucks because now I have a spare DVD copy I'll never use". However, cress2000 from AoD mentioned that if this is a way for us to get those "risky" shows on BD, I'm all for it. This also helps those people who haven't jumped in HD yet, but plan to *cough*Blood-*cough*. Also, Funimation doesn't have to release all these different products, meaning they save money. All in all, since the prices don't change, I think it's a great idea because there is no real downside to this.

I am curious, though, as to if GRZ still has an LE version or not. Although, if this means more shows on BD, I'll will overlook the loss limited editions.

Well, that's awesome. Speakin' as another person who hasn't jumped into HD yet, when I do, I'll be able to watch series/movies I already have on blu-ray. Good on ya, FUNi.

Wow, this is very cool! I had already planned to buy both of these titles on BD anyway (even though I still don't have a BD player) but I like the idea of having DVD copies just in case my conversion doesn't go as quickly as I had planned.

Goon on ya, Funi!

Ooohhhh, both of those were titles I wanted to get on BR and I also don't have a BR player (and at this rate probably won't for a good while) but I wouldn't mind getting those. Now I suppose the question is, provided TRSI updates their listings soon too, should I get EoE from RACS with the t-shirt or from TRSI with the keychain...

Hey gimme a break - I'm sick! No, not sick in the head (although a persuasive case could be made for that) but flu sick. Do not expect impeccable spelling or even coherence for the next 48 hours.

*gasp* So more shows will finally be released on Blu-Ray at the same time as the DVDs? This is lovely news! Plus, I'll be able to watch Eden of the East (EDIT: the movie, I mean) on more than one TV!

... But I still despise Ga-Rei Zero's artbox enough to consider not buying it. Very Happy

Great...I'm gonna be ticked off if they try to pull off this dual format thing as the new "limited". I pre-order Blu-ray because I intend to watch Blu-ray. I have no need for DVD's if there is a superior version in existence. Guess they will just go unwatched like in Bandai Visuals dual format sets...

I would hope that maybe if these sell well enough that they would split them up later?

I don't have Blu-Ray, and have absolutely ZERO plans to get one.
I don't care how "nice" this stuff looks, as I can see ZERO difference between them. I have a small 26" HDTV, and in order for me to even bother doing the Blu-Ray thing, I would have to spend an additional $1000 to get good enough stuff to even make it worth it. I seriously don't think I will be able to afford that for a long long time (and by then they will probably have some other medium that makes all this stuff "obsolete").

This is why I can't stand those DVD/Blu-Ray combo packs. Sure they cost the same as the original title (at least in MSRP), but you know that retailers will charge an extra "fee" for the "higher quality" product.

I was not really interested in these titles, just hope this is not a trend that continues on stuff I am interested in.

So I'm not too familiar with this DVD/BD combo thing... do they just give you essentially 2 copies of the show (one for BD and one for DVD)?

That'd be pretty sweet, though I wonder why they would do that, particularly since they're not charging hardly anything more (at least according to the RACS link).

How could I not like getting essentially two copies of the same thing for the price of one, even when I currently do not have a BluRay player?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure there'd have to be two separate copies. Actually, the cost to physically produce DVD copies and throw them in with the BDs is not that great. It's a smart move on Funi's part - this is the kind of thing that may encourage their remaining DVD customers to switch over to BDs faster than might otherwise be the case. And since the mark-up on BDs seems to be greater than the mark-up on DVDs, it means more profits for them (theoretically).

With Live Action stuff that is usually the case, although sometimes I think the DVD also has extras that are not on the BD. For example I have the BD set for Showgirls which also includes the VIP DVD which was the last two versions released.

I tend to think of these two in ones like this the BD is the home copy and the DVD is the road/borrow copy.

Here's what I'm thinking: They know/feel anime fans for the most part are quickly moving towards BD and aren't buying DVDs or are holding out to see if a BD becomes available. Obviously that hurts DVD sales, but they can't produce BD for everything because of the cost. However, if they pack the BDs with the DVDs, then it'll be available for everyone, despite the format they watch shows, and the BDs are almost guaranteed to sell well, making the production cost worth it.

Obviously I don't know anything about production, but I have to assume they aren't taking a huge hit here because everyone who'd buy the show will buy the show because their preferred format is available. In fact, I'd have to think sales would be better because there's no more holding out from BD buyers.

That's my theory, but I think someone with better knowledge of this stuff will come in here and tell me I'm completely wrong and inform us that Funimation is, indeed, taking a big risk.
