So this idea got brought up in the First impressions thread so I figured might as well make the thread for this question. As for me the answer is usually a no. I always give a series the first dvd rule which is 3-4 episodes before I decide to stop watching it. Just going by 1 episode is not enough. Once I have watched 3-4 if the show still does not capture my attention, or I flat out think it stinks, it gets dropped like a fat man at a buffet. Now i say usually because some shows have wound up on tv (Adult Swim) that I did not care for. It was on tv, I was up and bored, so I watched it because nothing else was on. Or if I'm at a friend's house and they have a show I don't like on I watch it anyways. I try to be a good and pleasant guest when at other people's places. Now if they ask me if I want to watch it I'll tell them honestly not really.

I am a completionist by in large so I generally feel the urge to finish what I start. Be it a show or a game etc. The thing is I can be forgiving at times and it does take a fair amount to get me to truly dislike a show. If a show, or game, can do that and get to that point then that generally overrides my desire to finish it. Some examples would be Gundam Seed Destiny, Boboboobo (however the hell you spell it), E's Otherwise, and Final Fantasy Unlimited.

I am generally guilty of this with DVDs I've purchased. I guess it's that dumb, "well, I paid for it, so I must watch it to the bitter end" concept. I've noted in the past that following up a waste of money with a waste of time is highly illogical, but I never claimed to be the most rational of peeps. Love Hina almost defeated me and I even announced my intention to not finish in the "What are you watching" thread (I was throwing in the towel around eppie 11) but then someone suggested I listen to the sub instead of the dub and that actually made the next few eppies more tolerable. Mind you, I still haven't finished the series...

Yeah I mostly feel that I have to complete a series in order to give it a fair shake, but lot of times my interest wanes so much that I'll just put it on my 'on-hold' list or something. There are exceptions of course. I watched the first 3 or 4 episodes of Shuffle, and I'm never going back to that wreck.

I drop shows very easily. For this reason I'm pretty careful about what I buy.

I have the bad habit of enjoying nearly any anime. But the few that I don't like I tend to finish because I personally can't leave a story hanging. Plus if I don't like it, I think my opinion is well rounded compared to someone that watches only a few episodes or only one. Then again that's what I tell myself so that I don't feel too bad for wasting my own time on something.

Okay, count me in on the "hard to stop watching after buying the dvd in the first place" category.

Fortunately, i'm WAY pickier about what dvds I buy vs. what I see on my computer.

But there is one exception, but it doesn't count as a purchase, at least not mine.

A friend loaned me Nerima Daikon Brothers, and I practically had to strap myself into a chair, a'la Clockwork Orange to finish that series.

Law of Diminishing Returns, anyone?

frickin Naruto and Bleach. I invested 150+ episodes into each, so I'm obligated to finish them.

^^This.

However, that doesn't mean I haven't dropped shows before. It's just very rare for me to do so. I mean, I'll declare from the rooftops that Dragonaut is the ultimate in crap and how I didn't bother to go past episode 9 but I usually try to keep going. I think if a show was truly bad, I wouldn't be watching it Razz

I put them on my on-hold list like you for the "bored and need something to watch" times. Though, there are some I force my self to finish when I first get it, like Rune Soldier. I don't even know why I still have that on my shelf, got it for free from my brother and I still sat through it.

I used to have that obsessive–compulsive need finish something once I started it. Looking back at the long list of stuff I've watched and not liked though, I realize how many hours I spent doing something I didn't enjoy. Now that I've let most of that behavior go I have no problem dropping a series if I'm not enjoying it. The only exception in a long time has been Lucky Star. I can't watch more than a couple episodes a week at most, yet for some reason I refuse to quit. It's an otaku pandering show, it looks good, and has high ratings, so I'm locked into the mindset that I should like it, even if I am bored for 2/3s of each episode. Its been months and I'm only half way through it. I've somehow convinced myself that I can't pass judgment until I've finished it if I want to keep my anime geek badge.

It helps though that these days I spend a little time and do research so I can try and make an appraisal on my interest in a show. Eight years ago when I had more time on my hands, a premium news server, and a fast connection(9mb/s for my area at the time) I was content to just download everything that came across the anime groups, and force myself to watch it all. Now that my time is limited and many of the dvds and blu-ray box sets are at a price I'm willing to pay, I try to be more selective in my watching habits. I have no issues pirating/streaming anime and watching it in it's entirety before I decide to buy it. I learned my lesson buying hundreds of video games, most of them I liked, but it was irritating when I ended up with ones that I didn't like, and felt like I had to play and finish them because I had bought them. I don't want that same issue buying anime before I'm sure its something I'm willing to own.

I do and I don't. This is a confusing answer, I know, but allow me to elaborate.

I still follow Naruto and Bleach as I've devoted so much time to the series, but I'm beginning to enjoy them less and less as time goes on. I've simply started branching off to shows that contain much more interesting plots and characters. Shounen doesn't do it for me as much anymore. I haven't given up on the genre completely, though. I've just started to notice an increasing pickiness in my part.

It's fair to say that my taste in anime has shifted with time and with it, my tolerance for particular genres of anime. When I first began watching anime, I could sit through most shows and follow them to the end. I watched literally everything I could get my hands on except hentai (which I will never watch). As time went on, my tolerance for shows with characters that reak of moe and loli has reached an all time low. I attempted to watch K-ON! to the end when it was first airing, but I couldn't because of this. I couldn't even get through the first five minutes of Lucky Star. I did however manage to get through The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya years before, though I did force myself through it. These are just some of my peeves with anime, though. I hate completely dropping shows and for the few that I have, I feel guilty for doing so.

I also watched Serial Experiments Lain to the end, even though I hated it. I did it simply because I felt like it was those must-watch anime series. I also wanted to be able to discuss it and justify my position on why I disliked it.

I feel that this is how most people start off. When we're fresh to the world of anime, we're willing to give most things a shot.

It depends how much I don't like it and how long it is. Usually, however, I won't bother. I don't buy DVDs of something I have never watched unless it comes highly recommended (my only recent blind buys were Twelve Kingdoms and Rumbling Hearts) so I don't have the issue of buying something I don't like often. And honestly, there are enough good shows out there that I don't want to waste my time on something I don't enjoy. If I really want to know the ending, I'll read a synopsis (which is how I know how Death Note ended).

There are some shows that I have watched to the end because they were okay but nothing special (though not for awhile, I think the last time I did that was when I watched Princess Princess). But they were still at least somewhat enjoyable.

To drop an anime, it must to extremely bad.

So far the only shows I've ever dropped are Kodomo no Omocha and Samurai Deeper Kyo. You ought to be able to gauge whether something is of your tastes or not. Otherwise, why even start it?

During my college years, I very rarely dropped anime titles I watched as I was snagging whatever I got my hands on. Nowadays, I guess you could say I'm a bit more shrewd with how committed I am towards a series since I don't have as much spare time to kill since graduating from college. If there's enough that can hold my interest in an anime title, then I'll commit to the series for its entire run as I normally watch up to four episodes to get a good sense of whether or not I will enjoy said title and commit to it. But then again, I often tend to dump titles that I can't stand watching in less that number of episodes if I can't stand watching them.

For me, it depends more on what other anime shows i am watching at the time. Someone brought up Dragonaut and yes that TV show was really bad for my taste atleast. However, the season in which the show aired had little to offer and therefore i ended up watching the show.
Also, generally if i have watched a tv show over half way, i will tend to watch it all the way through with the exceptions of Bleach and Naruto. Those two have been too long for my taste, and i lost interest on both.
