I guess the reg changes are just to make life easier for the appropriate staff. Lord knows they could use all the help they can get*

Is it just me, or doess everything just become better in a sporting arena? When I read about the Masquerade, I was like "oh snap! That's cool!"

*Not a slam against the reg staff. I just understand that handling 25,000 parcels isn't exactly simple.

I was only one of the people helping out at the "problem booth" and I spent about five hours dealing with nothing but problems directly related to group registrations. Last year we also had several hundred people who signed up at the early-bird rate, then mailed their registration three months later. There just wasn't a good way to handle that and still allow for mail-in checks.

Every solution that we came up with turned out to be either labor-intensive or massively inconvenient, or too costly to implement in our registration/membership system.

And the fact is that our costs have kept going up, especially those related to travel and lodging. (I'm sure other cons are seeing this problem too.) Adding the Arena to last year's costs was the big thing, but it buys us SOOO much more programming space all day saturday, it really should be worth the expense. We're hoping that it pays off and relieves over-crowding in certain areas.

Anyway, the increased costs had to come from somewhere and we've kept our rates almost artificially low for several years now -- at the expense of much-needed improvements and changes that have been waiting in the wings for money to spend on them. So it was really down to either hiking everyone ten bucks, or hiking everyone $5 and eliminating some discounts that were a source of problems. (Incidentally, the staff, who voted in this change, also have to cough up the increase as well.)
